Anyone have any good tricks or  tips on prepping for emergency  situations
stock up supplies.. anything goes.
Image
I'll start. We lose the power a lot here in Maine.
We use kerosene lamps for light.
Sometimes it just isnt enough light.
I place two  medium size mirrors by the lamp.
Voila I have three lights.

What are the inherent problems to stacking up for emergencies? A person or group becomes labeled uncompassionate, uncaring, self absorbed, callous, greedy, mean, unsocial by those demanding social rights to other people's time mutually evolving here.

then there is maintenance of the supplies kept. Inventory taxes on retail business, sales taxes on anything sold, taxes on anything owned by individuals or businesses. income taxes on personal income or corporate taxes to pay elected officials to govern outcomes tomorrow, today.

Catch 22, biology sustains eternal separation of each reproduction inhabiting time occupying space geographically present, here now. Kinetically self evident but society is governed by potential doubt now was never eternity in plain sight.

I will edit this post so you have your last post, last post and not all threads with me being last to add a post.

I started with the TEN CATEGORIES OF MILITARY SUPPLY as a guideline. Food - canned goods, freeze dried  ... Water - ind a water source and get water PURIFICATION (Katadyn systems are good to have) ... Ammunition - you can never have enough, everyone should have a rifle (I prefer 308), a shotgun (12 ga), and a sidearm (in 40S&W) ... barter items - gold, silver, chocolate, booze, etc  ... hygiene items - shaving gear, haircut kit, talc, shampoo, soap, etc. ... medicine - painkiller and antibiotics if you can .... a library ("how to" manuals for raising food, medical [RANGER and SPECIAL FORCES medical manuals are available for free online] .... tools - gardening, medical, carpentry, automotive   .... fuel - solar, GENERAC, natural gas, etc.

why 10? Integers only repeat/evolve after 0-9 and the binary code of 0 or 1. X and 0. + or -.

Preparing for a possible breakdown in the legal/social/economic order is just common sense.
AARGuy's list is a good starting point. And there are dozens of 'prepper' sites with useful advice,
and lists of items you ought to have available.

But ... the next step after you've begun to prepare, is to try to form, or join, a group of like-minded
people in your area.

A group of a dozen people who have organized themselves -- who can communicate with each
other even if the ordinary means of communication are down, who have trained together for
dealing with emergencies, who have even a rudimentary chain of command -- such a group
is a hundred times as effective as a dozen isolated individuals.

At the moment, no national organization for doing this exists. All attempts at forming such
a group have run into serious problems -- the Oathkeepers, the Three Percenters -- all have had
defective leaderships.

So at the moment, forming a local group is the safest thing to do.

Some people who seem to know what they're doing -- a loose network of local groups -- can
be found here: https://USCPT.org

Forming a local group from scratch, and then building it, is an art. We need to discuss how to do it.

ok, i love this thread... I'm a prepper too, though not as much as i would like to be... I want to learn more!

But for light I have multiple led lanterns that are very bright and last for a very long time. I have water stockpiled for a month, and canned/dried food for several months. There's only so much I can keep in a 1 bedroom apartment... bc if the shtf, I can't carry all that with me. :-)

What kind of prepping does an apartment dweller do, when I can't fortify my house?

The only thing I can do, in a nuclear emergency is bug out. Because i'm in one of the top cities that would be hit.

You are not prepared for Intellectual Armageddon. You are prepared to cause extinction of this species if you don't get your collective intellectual way.

can you come up with 10 steps exiting intellectual 9 gates of eternal hell induced saving humanities?

Hope, faith, charity, power, wealth, fame, mayhem, madness, misery caused by every generation of arriving great great grandchildren are educated to repeat the behavior of ignoring now is eternity, again, regardless the reality of their social identity assumed cradle to grave..

10th step, stop denying now is eternity and biology sustains eternal separation of reproductions actively alive since order of arrival to ancestral displacement of generation gap added.

I never lived in a big city, but I sure would hate to have to bug out.  To me, that seems like the worst option.

Think the whole bug-out thing through.  There's nowhere to go in suburban areas.  Houses built right next to each other in neighborhoods - you can bet those folks will be armed.  And, the ones who are not prepared, will have enough firepower to pick off people fleeing from inner cities with backpacks full of supplies.

You know you're going to be on foot or on a bicycle.  Because, there won't be any gas, and inner city folks don't generally have cars anyway.  Even if you have a car, you won't get it out of the city before you are attacked and supplies ravaged.

So, even if you get to the rural areas with your bug-out-bag, then what?  Folks like me will be guarding our land against intruders - you have to stay off private land.  I suppose if you could make your way to a wildlife management area, national/state park or national forest, you might find a way to be relatively free from others attacking you.  But, once you exhaust your supplies just getting there, then what?  I picture millions of city folks hunting squirrels with .22 pistols in national forests.  The squirrel supply should last about 2 days.

I tried supplying mountain house freeze dried food. But it's so expensive. It's cheaper to lug around canned food, if I have a car. Without a car, MH is really good.

You(Social Identity) really project your reality over real even after kinetic physical absolutes that go with evolving in plain sight are explained in all accountability to how, why, which, where, when, what ancestor you are occupying space here.

Your post is the traditional ancestral **** been hitting the fan since dawn of civilization created "Chain of command social order protected by laws punishing anyone that doesn't comply with psychological class warfare at every level of mind over matter governance managing time as displaced ancestrally present.".

Let me use my brain, unique evolved fertilized cell that navigates time as one of a kind existing in series parallel space mutually evolving as conceived to replace the 30 people of one's previous 4 generations of 16 great great grandparents, 8 great grandparents, 4 grandparents, 2 parenting one's arrival to evolve into maybe becoming 1 of parenting next generation of arriving great great grandchildren as one's son or daughter. When and if those children evolve into 1 of 2 parents, the rest is self evident.

Your mind isn't as smart as your ancestry says it became after birth. You gave up navigating time as yourself and adopted a career as a typecast individual demanding rights to never go back to being equally alive now mental state of mind.

You don't like being stereotyped at the same time you typecast anyone not on your side of "We the people say so and rule of law eliminates anyone not complying by any means necessary from society taking back what their family earned upto eliminating the person or family not complying with humanity.".

so compounding simplicity of correct understanding of evolving in plain sight as ancestrally displaced as eternally separated naturally or self fulfilling Eternal Hell defying genetics sustains mutually evolving here now.

Your choice. Free will and all that jazz.

You like apples?

Not necessarily.  I would think it would be possible to prepare for a disaster even in an urban setting.  You would have to choose a structure that can be sustained without electricity for a long period of time - I see that as the biggest problem.  Then, stashing 6 months of emergency food supply isn't all that expensive nor difficult.  Defense - you should be able to get your hands on a couple of guns and sufficient ammo for defense. Communication - I'd keep a CB radio around for that. Barter - could be done with a stash of old Mercury dimes and cheap booze. Water would be an issue, especially if you are living in a sky box. But, if you are near the ground, it shouldn't be too difficult to get access to water.

You would need to be able to reinforce your entrance and windows.  I used a cheap system which was nothing more than a steel bar going across rear doors to make it very difficult to break into some warehouses I owned. You would break the concrete walls before you could bash that door in.  About the only way to defeat it would be to cut into the steel door, which takes time.

While all of the unprepared people in the city are trying to "bug out" or kill each other for supplies, you could stay shut in, if you can stand the cabin fever.

@impartialobserver  has some very interesting and enlightening stories to tell about his time living in a bum-camp.  I see this being very similar to a bug-out situation where you would be among hoards of other homeless people.   Basically, I see this as a very dangerous and unsustainable way of surviving, unless you are already hardened to that way of living.  It's not just about being resourceful and equipped. Its more about instinctively knowing how to avoid the crazy **** desperate (or just plain crazy) people will do to you.

I had a modern crank radio too, probably still have it somewhere. I would crank the crap out of it and it would only last about 20 seconds before I'd have to crank it again. A good device to keep around is one of those auto jump-starters.  Those things hold a lot of juice for a long time, and they can be used to power a bunch of different devices.
