Expert on Autocrats Says We Need to Prosecute and Convict Trump

Politico has posted an interview with Ruth Ben-Ghiat, a professor of Italian history and expert on autocracy at NYU, and the author of Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present. She originally published it in July 2020, during the Biden-Trump election campaign, but even then she predicted Trump couldn’t leave quietly if he lost.

“I just predicted that he wouldn’t leave in a quiet manner,” Ben-Ghiat, a professor of history and Italian studies at New York University told me recently. “He’s an authoritarian, and they can’t leave office. They don’t have good endings and they don’t leave properly.”

The genius of the “big lie” was not only that it sparked a movement that ended up with January 6 to physically allow him to stay in office. But psychologically the “big lie” was very important because it prevented his propagandized followers from having to reckon with the fact that he lost. And it maintains him as their hero, as their winner, as the invincible Trump, but also as the wronged Trump, the victim. Victimhood is extremely important for all autocrats. They always have to be the biggest victim.

The ones I would like to see prosecuted are Eric, Donald Jr, Ivanka, and Jared.

I think some substantial jail time, and a couple hundred million in fines for each of them would sting a bit.

The last impeachment trial was a joke in the Senate.
Here Mitch McConnell clearly states Trump was guilty of inciting the Jan 6 riot on our Nations Capital, and yet he voted against impeachment leaving open the opportunity for Trump to run once again.
Desantos in Florida and all the crazy nuts in that state ban a precalculus book which as a small chart at the end of one of the chapters about racism in the US. The chart was being used to illustrate how math is used in the real world. A few crazy white parents were given the mission to scan through the math books - A. obviously they do not understand math, and - B. what right do they have decide how math is taught in public schools when any normal and fair-minded person would finds this absurd at best?
None of these nuts even knows what cricial race theory is - and the truth is it is only taught at the graduate school level in Law School regarding historic public policy laws and the truth behind where our government got it wrong, as well as how it ended up costing us all!

Just like Trump, these crazy right-wing people in Congress are given daily news headlines. It feeds this nonsensical frenzy of bull.
They are the big liars. That's what the Republican Party has become - well has been let's say, and for quite a while now.
Normally you cannot waltz into any Federal Government Building without going through security - that made sense,
And then came Jan 6. Wasn't that enough to show how crazy things have gotten?
They were calling John McCain and now Liz Chaney and Mitt Romney rhinos - I call that a shift to the far far right, to say the very least.
It's fascism and clearly obscene just as much as a Nazi parade, sure they have the right to free speech, but should they garner so much television and radio time without a strong rebuke from actual governmental leaders??? Well boys and girls, if you are an elected Republican leader and you fail to do so - You are 100 percent responsible!!! no if's ands or but's.

Our vote wont have any meaning like a vote in Russia does!!!  Women and all minorities will once again be second class citizens like the 50s.  rich white men will be able to rape and beat up un protected single women and will not go to jail for it

But think about this: If THIS is how these hateful cultists act WITH a Democrat as President, and an near even split Senate, WHAT DO YOU THINK THESE FKRS WILL DO WHEN THEY SEIZE FULL CONTROL... OF EVERYTHING.

It will be worse by a hundredfold.

And most ALL of it is because of one Donald Trump. If Trump is not prosecuted and convicted, THIS DEMOCRACY WILL FALL.

Heard in the news today that Trump is tinkering with the idea of announcing a run for president in 2024 in July due to the heat of the congressional Jan 6 commission hearings likely causing a criminal indictment by the Justice Department - which by the way has it's own investigation going on.
Note: Justice just recently ceased electronics from Jeffrey Clark's home, which was prosecuted by a warrant for probable cause.
Clark was working for the Trump administration as an environmental lawyer, and because he went along with the big lie, Trump wanted to make him the new AG at the end of his term. The only reason this didn't happen was because the white house lawyers all said they would resign immediately if it did.
Trump is tearing this country apart with lies and conspiracy theories that sadly abound all over the internet. QAnon, etc... the lies, the connections to racist Nationalist movements, all culminating directly to an insurrection against the US capital and democracy as we know it.
At this point, the Justice Department has no choice but to indict Trump and all those who participated in the Coup against our Democracy!

The "justice" department has sufficient reason and ample evidence to prosecute Trump for MULTIPLE CRIMES.  But I believe Garland to be a spineless wimp who PROBABLY won't do a DAMN thing.

Trump may be an old man, but he is also a very dangerous man. All he and the Republicans have been doing since 2020 is put more MAGAS in place in local government positions so they can cheat better in elections. Trump is the kind of person who will break something if he cannot have it. He never conceded, he never congratulated President Biden, and he never told his supporters to support President Biden for the good of the country. He has kept "his people" tied to him by lying about the election being rigged. And that is what is causing and feeding all of the division and hate in America. He should definitely be prosecuted. Why is that even a question? When any other American breaks the law they are prosecuted. Over 800 of the January 6 insurrectionists have been charged/arrested/convicted. But the guy who engineered the whole thing is playing golf everyday at his country club? I don't know what they are waiting for.

I agree 100 percent. If Trump and his co-conspirator - insurrectionists were tried and CONVICTED by now for their attempted OVERTHROW OF GOVERNMENT America would be FAR better off by now.

America's WEAKNESS IN SEEING THIS THROUGH has only BOLSTERED their arrogance and boldness in support of THE BIG LIE. So that in effect THE COUP IS STILL ONGOING.

Worse still they're trying to spread their ANTI-DEMOCRATIC INFLUENCE in other parts of the globe. Reports of only yesterday of Trump and Co. trying to tell Bolsonaro not to concede his loss in Brazil's presidential election and trying to incite HIS followers to VIOLENCE. 

A report I just read indicates he plans to concede under threat of growing tensions. 

Which, IF TRUE, either means he's a far better man than TRUMP will EVER BE, or perhaps he knows that unlike the US, Brazil MIGHT not hold much TRUCK with seditionists, domestic terrorists, insurrectionists and TREASON.
