I'm thinking seriously about giving it a try. It is definitely the coolest sport ever! Oh, to be 20 again when I was surfing!
It's definitely a cool sport. Kiteboarding is a natural progression for people who were proficient at windsurfing. I used to do a lot of windsurfing. I seriously considered kiteboarding, until I saw just how much that equipment cost. I even looked into a used rig, but the kites alone are about $2,000+ a piece, and you would need several kites depending on the wind speed. That's not even getting into the board, harness, controls, lines, etc.
You could try to go the used equipment rout, but there's no way to know what you're getting will work, so that's not really a good plan for beginners. Personally, I prefer windsurfing over kiteboarding for a number of reasons - such as high speeds and much longer distances. But, there just aren't a lot of windsurfers anymore.
