If someone wants to be spiritual/religious and it helps them... fine. However, I adamantly disagree with the belief that being religious/spiritual makes someone more moral or a better person. BTW... I am descended from a French Catholic priest who was a pedophile who admitted to getting off on pain and suffering. Believing in God did not help him or his victims.

It's akin to meditation or baking cookies for your sick kid or whatever hobby.

Ok, so it can help someone. Cool. So can a lot of things. However, the point of the OP is that lack of religion leads to being immoral and therefore increased violence. A lot of things can help a person.. religion is just one of many. It is no better or valuable than the others. I will not divulge the details but had a not so great summer with an older brother. The main exposure to "death" this generation has had is from playing Black Ops Commando Nintendo and watching Taratino movies.
I guess there is just something in human nature that draws us to the morbid. Public executions used to draw large crowds too. Still, the question of meaning and purpose also comes into play when you analyze what we hold dear in this current epoch of American society.
Nothing is easier than defending the status quo.

Now as time passes the world has become more bleak for many and the rejection of any sort of meaning in life is much more common. This is a proper analysis of the state of American society at this point in my opinion where we find ourselves looking in the mirror again with the latest mass killing. Link to Atlantic article here.

I guess the point I was trying to make is that violence has probably gone from reality to fantasy. We have better health outcomes too. Still, I do feel there is something missing despite all these advances. That is probably the reason that people don't believe in anything anymore. End of the Enlightenment?

I never made my point about religion. That was not so unclear.
You folks morphed what I said. True belief in God and religion are separate things.
Like being a spiritual person. That's a personal aspect of an individual.
I, too, have had what appears to be a similar event that I choose not to discuss.
A peace or some solace can be found where each person's journey takes them.
It appears you, like me, don't need a building full of fellow worshippers to find that calm.
Maybe a little acknowledgement that the person meant a lot to you would suffice.
Beyond that, I didn't want much from the world that I couldn't get on my own.
