Good point. 
It takes an "acquired feel" for how things should fit and the experience to known where most problems are bound to occur over time.
I'm familiar with model airplane engines, which in many ways are built to the same standards as hand guns.

I like to see if a gun is over-engineered or under engineered, as well as what level of finishing it has.  The hard thing with the newer guns/rifles is the plastic and integration of steel with the plastic parts. With plastic, only time will tell.  I have a 2nd Gen Glock (2-pin Glock) that was mfg 1991.  I used to shoot it a lot and carried it in my car for years. Plastic and metal is still near perfect. Now, that's a testament to Gaston Glock's tough-as-nails pistols.

I can not only read but as one who has actually shot thousands of rounds thru the M 16 and hundreds of rounds thru a semi auto sports rifle I know the differences.
