WOW - very nice. I'm going to have to pass on that. I honestly wish I knew more about the Katana. Is the one in that photo really 200 years old? I really would like to hear more about it if you buy it.JinnMartini » 13 Jun 2022, 10:32 am » wrote: ↑ @Skans
$19,500 !
200 years old with all kind of certificates.
Will need a government permit to export it . . . about $2,000 +
Are you interested ?
I don't need to make even a $1 profit on this.
If not . . . I'll just buy it for my livingroom.
----------------------------------------------------------------
My wife's father used to own two of those . . . with sheat and all !
He was a high police officer and a kendo pro.
I searched everywhere in his property . . . but all I could find were two European Middle Ages stilettos (how the **** did they get here ?) . . . a bit rusty but still quite in good shape !
And one 170 year old silver Yen.
The last one I gave present to the father of my second simultaneous wife.
Which I kind of regretted really . . . because he turned out to be a real piece of democratic **** !
Well, can't turn back what has happened !
Better to learn to live with it !
Sold the stilettos for about $7,000 each to an antiquity store, here in Osaka.
They looked pretty cool !
(Image is just for illustration.
They actually looked bettter than that.)
No, it's not the one.Skans » 13 Jun 2022, 12:50 pm » wrote: ↑ WOW - very nice. I'm going to have to pass on that. I honestly wish I knew more about the Katana. Is the one in that photo really 200 years old? I really would like to hear more about it if you buy it.
Looks very nice !
It is not confederate. Although I am indeed related to Bedford forest...man if I had his sword that would be pretty amazing.JinnMartini » 14 Jun 2022, 5:32 am » wrote: ↑ Looks very nice !
Is it a Confederate sword ?
Could be both, of course . . . but somehow i feel it's a Confederate.
The moment I saw it . . . I pictured Lee brandishing it !
Can you post it completely out of it's sheath ?

Cool, man !
by stories of the guy who gave it to me, tbh. Hes been dead 20 years. But he fought in both world wars. both kills were Japanese people.JinnMartini » 14 Jun 2022, 7:24 am » wrote: ↑ Cool, man !
That's what I was going to ask you next !
By means of dents - . . .
Or crosses x . . .
Can you show them ?
That's not so nice !

Would have loved it if they had been arabs . . . or jews !
Same **** . . . different label !
Now, that sounds a lot like what I'd expect for a genuine hand-made Katana by an artisan. This is quite an interesting read, Jinn. How I wish I was there with you to even experience the possibility of you purchasing such a sword - this is exciting. I know what good Katanas sell for - the price is not unexpected. I also know there are many different levels and grades of hand-made Katanas. The artisan's name and reputation I believe is a very important factor. It would take me years, maybe decades of study to fully understand Japanese swordsmithing, and it could probably only be done in Japan - not something I could ever expect to do remotely. It is a fascinating craft.JinnMartini » 14 Jun 2022, 4:31 am » wrote: ↑ No, it's not the one.
In this swordsshop + swordsmithing lab they don't allow anyone to take pictures.
Most serious ones don't.
They're all very secretive about how they forge their stuff.
And their forms . . . which vary greately !
In fact in this kind of places there are not TWO katanas that are the same
They don't need to publicize their stuff either.
Serious potential buyers find their way for sure.
Not many customers . . . but they sure come from far & wide !
Mostly older, affluent Japanese . . . not your average 9 to 5 guys.
And they look with suspicion to a foreigner entering the premises.
I know this joint through my wife's father, during my first travel to Japan, to introduce me to her parents, prior to our marriage, who introduced me to them so I'm kind of accepted.
Especially after I flash out the visiting card they offered me with the handwritten name on it of one of their dynasty's swordsmiths . . . that is no more.
That happened over 40 years ago.
That is when all the ****-shimasu starts . . . long and deep bowing with the face . . . well . . . facing the tatami floor.
Before I buy it, though, I'll look some more to find out where the hell my wife's father kept his two . . . they were two of the finest.
Wife said after his demise her mom threw all his belongings in a garbage dump.
But I find it hard to believe she would do this with his katanas !
Plus she kept all his Kimonos and Hakamas (official uniform for Kendo competitions, where he was very skilled in) . . .
So the extensive search is still on !
LoL
Shops selling the worthless ones to tourists do allow pictures to be taken.
No need to be so formal !FOS » 14 Jun 2022, 7:39 am » wrote: ↑ By the way I got annoyed at my photos cause an educated man might probably conclude I don't know basic fencing.
Actually I do. I was just doing a lazy photograph and didn't think if it till now.
Look. I get it.

The Lance of Longinus.
The lance that pierced Jesus' side and may have killed him. And of course, that gave it "magical powers", because that is how one gets magical powers...
