Afghans are also very fixated with their religious identity and culture. America poured money into that country for two decades and lost in a matter of weeks. Apparently the Taliban was better than a functioning government for most Afghans. The funny thing about the Reagan myth (although I wouldn't call it a complete myth) is that Communism fell in 1991. Reagan left office in early 1989. He did give the "tear down this wall" speech but many people forget that George HW Bush was President at the actual conclusion. Reagan was probably a large player but it sometimes is a misnomer in history.

I tend to think Bush played a bigger role than we have been told. Reagan still holds the public imagination.
