Solidarity (Polish: „Solidarność”, pronounced [sɔliˈdarnɔɕt͡ɕ] (listen)), a Polish non-governmental trade union, was founded on August 14, 1980, at the Lenin Shipyards (now Gdańsk Shipyards) by Lech Wałęsa and others. In the early 1980s, it became the first independent labor union in a Soviet-bloc country. Solidarity gave rise to a broad, non-violent, anti-Communist social movement that, at its height, claimed some 9.4 million members. It is considered to have contributed greatly to the Fall of Communism.
The People's Republic of Poland attempted to destroy the union by instituting martial law in 1981, followed by several years of political repression but in the end was forced into negotiation. The Roundtable Talks between the Communist government and the Solidarity-led opposition resulted in semi-free elections of 1989. By the end of August 1989, a Solidarity-led coalition government had been formed, and Wałęsa was elected president in December 1990. This was soon followed by the dismantling of the Communist governmental system and by Poland's transformation into a modern democratic state.
Solidarity's early survival represented a break in the hard-line stance of the Communist Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR), and was an unprecedented event; not only for the People's Republic of Poland—a satellite of the Soviet Union ruled by a one-party Communist state—but for the whole of the Eastern Bloc. Solidarity's example led to the spread of anti-Communist ideas and movements throughout the Eastern Bloc, weakening Communist governments.
This process later culminated in the Revolutions of 1989.

One of the many travesties that unions committed against our nation was child labor laws. The commie bastards saw kids as competition, so they OUTLAWED hiring kids to work in factories and steel mills. Imagine how much better off we would be, if our factories could hire kids, and pay whatever the market would bear! There would be jobs for EVERYONE - two or three apiece, for the love of Pete. Unions destroy jobs for everyone - especially children.

Her straight phlosophy books - though flawed and deranged and immature and incognizant of the nature of the humans in whose "interests" they are purportedly written - are quite an easy read. I have been in management for decades and have successfully thwarted/resisted shop unionization many times. TRADE unions are something entirely different. They are guilds, in essence - and they are highly functional, highly reliable, and extremely useful to society - now, more than ever. As the building trades have grown more complex to meet the expanding demands created by better and better technology, highly trained workers - UNION workers, GUILD workers - are more essential than ever.
Shop unions began life sucking and continue to suck. (I guess they were ARGUABLY "necessary" at some point in our history.) So, when you say "unions," and you do not specify, you make the same mistake as tranny-worshiper @Skans . It's like lumping geishas with crack whores. They have some common elements - but they are not the same thing.

My understanding is that Trade Unions follow the same collective bargaining rules as do Shop Unions.. In other words, they can force Employers to ONLY employ people who belong to the Union. I say Employers should be allowed to employ whoever they damn so choose. That's how its done in the South. In the south, you pay more for union labor, because you don't have hiring halls. You pay traveler wages. But you PAY, because you HAVE to, because your non-union Cletes don't have the chops to build a Hyatt Resort or an international airport or a coliseum.
Trade unions are labor guilds - extremely useful to society, as most things that persist over time are. Midwits who hate on unions remind me of midwits who hate bureacracy. Name ONE empire that did not have a prodigious bureucracy, and I will eat my hat while kissing your ***.
Now, it is certainly true that unions generally turn down work that employs non-union workers at any level of the construction job. That is, iron workers won't take the work if the electrical is being done by bubbas. I'm sure they have their reasons for this - and I'm sure I could generate several that are perfectly justifiable. But whatever deal employers make in order to secure the services of guild members are THEIR business and none of yours. You need to mind YOURS - not theirs. What business is it of yours if businesses make this deal or that deal to secure services? No one OWES employers their labor - they have to bargain for it. Your sense of entitlement is astounding.
