Boris Johnson, resigning today: "Them's the breaks." Not a single sentence taking responsibility for his crash and burn.
Donald Trump, as hundreds of thousands of his fellow Americans died: "It is what it is." Not a single sentence taking responsibility for the nation's crash and burn.
Tucker Carlson blamed the Highland Park shooting on medication and women nagging young men.
Laura Ingraham blamed the Highland Park shooting on pot.
Conservatives in the past: "The buck stops here."
Conservatives today: "What buck? Oh, that buck. God bless and keep the buck ... far, far away from me."
Side note.
America once taught England about how a democracy worked. Today England taught America about how a democracy is supposed to work.
And lesson number one is that a commitment to democracy and to the well-being of the nation comes before commitment to self and to party. So, when you have a corrupt, unhinged leader, you take steps to remove him. Even if it means you resign your powerful job. Even it means you stroll down to the residence and tell your leader to get the hell out.
And this points to the role of elites. Exactly the role the founders envisioned. The danger in a democracy is that regular folk are easily swayed by demagogues with no commitment to anything other than their own power. But elites are supposed to see through that. And, when the danger is acute, they are supposed to put country over personal ambition, step in, and remove the cancer from the nation.
Britain did that today. America's conservative elites are still feeding the cancer, perhaps hoping that a dose of ultraviolet light or a splash of bleach will melt the cancer away like the Wicked Witch of the West. As long as Dorothy wields the bucket. While they look away.
It's not our responsibility. Keep that buck far far away from me ...
