There is always a risk that unions...like any other institution (thr catholic church for example) becomes cooped by people with a political agenda. 

Which is why Hitler shut down (and imprisoned) the Communist led private unions in Germany and replaced them with the public German labor front.

I come from a union family. I was a member of the AFLCIO. And it WAS the only job in impoverished central maine that i had health benefits.
Nasty father worked the carpenters union. He was making 16 an hour. Years ago. when the local maine men were working for 7? wtf? He did have to pay dues.. He retired with a pension and a nice ss check.
They used to call me up on the telephone? and want me to work for them.. lolol
I would like to add to my comment. These days the unions seem to be getting a bit too weird. Like the teachers union.. woke. So in my world the jury is out on this.
we will see how it all plays out. They used to be good?

Trade unions are different than public sector unions.
I see no reason why teachers need a union.

Construction techniques  and materials require less training and skill to install nowadays.
Union Safety Rules add time / cost to a job bid
"Easy Jobs" that used to go to the elderly Union Hands have been reclassified as lower paying "Specialty Trades".
An example of this is the  "LOW VOLTAGE / LIMITED ENERGY ELECTRICAL SPECIALTY" that installs fire alarm, nurse call intercom, security system, solar systems, PA Systems..."Technicians" who make 80% of what a full fledged electrician makes.
Back in the day much more of  this work was done by Full Fledged Union Electricians...especially if rigid steel conduit was involved.
