Take mechanical watches for example. Each of the countries listed above (except for the Czechs) take pride in the ability of companies that can make very fine, precision watches. But, then look at Russian made mechanical watches - freaking ugly as monkey **** and crudely made. Yes, they work, but Russian made watches offend me they are so damn ugly. I've tried to find one, JUST ONE, that I could say "now, that's a fine watch", but it's impossible. They are all f-ing total ****.
What about guns - can the Russians make a fine weapon? No, they can't. They make crude weapons that work. Compare a Russian Over-Under shotgun made by Baikal to an O/U shotgun made by any of the Italian makers. There is no comparison. The Russian one is a monkey-turd that works ok, while the Italian shotguns can be as sought after as original paintings by famous artists.
It's that way with everything Russia makes. For a country that is rather industrialized, Russia seems eons behind other European countries (and Japan) as to the level of fineness and quality.
I have not examined Russia's present military machines vs. America's or other countries' military machines mainly because I do not have access to the relevant information. You may, I don't know, but you do seem to have some level of technical knowledge.FOS » 28 Jul 2022, 6:50 am » wrote: ↑ russia has always had a very authoritarian and controlled economy. in areas where the state has interest in developing, however, they tend to outpace the USA. Remember they went to space first...and their rocket propulsion is simply far superior to ours. (our black tranny engineers seem unable to replicate hypersonic missle technology). The best russian tanks are better than our russian tanks. The best russian attack helicopters are better than our best attack helicopters (indeed israel buys their attack helicopters from russia)...stuff like that.
but because they have generally been cut off from global civilian trade, you as a civilian are unlikely to encounter any decent engineering from russia. there was no point for them to even develop such industries.

Perhaps there is some truth to this. I am looking at achievements, technical prowess, creativity, and peaceful governance to support what I claim. Perhaps there is something systemically inferior about Slavs. Just speculation, not even a theory, and certainly I am not holding this out as fact.SJConspirator » 28 Jul 2022, 11:32 am » wrote: ↑ Churchill believed that Rus people were inferior to Northern Europeans. As far as weaponry goes, why WOULD Russia need to get good at designing their own? They can save millions, using the money to help their people - nd just take our designs.Skans » 28 Jul 2022, 5:51 am » wrote: ↑ When it comes to manufacturing fine things such as watches, vehicles or guns, certain nations excel such as Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Japan and even the Czechs to a more limited degree. Metal stretch bands??? Decent watches that need to be water proof now incorporate high quality rubber straps. Or, you can find some water proof leather straps, but they don't last as long.Bob » 29 Jul 2022, 6:41 am » wrote: ↑ Looks OK, don't chose poorly. Have not tried a wrist band watch since I was a teenager. Will need a waterproof unit with leather wrist band, even at over 65 i may have to be moving quickly and the metal stretch bands will not hold.
I have bought several watches that have been really great in every way EXCEPT for the bands.Skans » 29 Jul 2022, 8:55 am » wrote: ↑ Metal stretch bands??? The "rubber" (actually some synthetic silicone) has outlasted the watch in four examples now.
The watches are still ticking away, but the bands broke and no replacement is available.
The metal bands tend to get all crudded up and are less comfortable.
"Leather" bands are treated heavily with synthetic stuff, and do not fit as well.
My present solution is a Timex Expedition digital watch with a fabric and Velcro strap. The good thing about Timex is that they are guaranteed. Even past the expiration date, Timex will sell you a new replacement for a wholesale price.
I have never owned a Russian watch, or any expensive name brand watch.
Except for my father gave me a Bulova Accutron for graduation from university.
Five years later, he noticed that I was wearing something else, and I had to tell him that a jeweler wanted $30 to "clean" it after it stopped working, and the replacement was only $19.95, and told me both the day and date.
He was so disappointed, it made me feel bad.

Come on, splurge - get yourself one of these, which at $10K are actually a good value:Xavier_Onassis » 29 Jul 2022, 10:22 am » wrote: ↑ I have bought several watches that have been really great in every way EXCEPT for the bands.
