Salman Rushdie attack: Why the world gives Islam such a long rope

All I can come up with is that unless one is a white christian American...one is a **** mongrel.

Personally, I do agree with professor Majumder.  Particularly when even "moderate" muslims look the other way when it comes to a fellow Muslim like Rushdie exercising free speech and the fatwa that continues to be directed at him.

I think what has happened to him (recently and over the years) is horrible. However, it is a example/reminder to many that the "free speech" enjoyed in the US doesn't apply around the world. He knew (or should have known) what he was getting himself into from the beginning. It's sad, but not unexpected. Equally sad is him having to constantly deal with the consequences of the choice(s) he made. For most people, the consequences are a one time event...no so much with him. I admire his courage.

Like all religions, there is much about Islam that is downright silly. The Star of Bethlehem, that led the Magi to Jesus birthplace and stopped right above it, the miracles attributed to the bones of Buddha, and Mohammad's midnight ride from Mecca to Jerusalem and back are all just plum silly.  Telling or writing the truth should never be condemned by any sane person.  Rushdie is a very witty writer and thinker and sentencing him to death for "Satanic Verses" is simply absurd. I have a feeling that NONE of those making this fatwa had actually even READ this novel.

I hope that Rushdie has a complete recovery.

Islam is in a position similar to that of Christianity in the period of the Reformation. It was quite anti-intellectual at the time of Galileo.  Galileo pointed out that the Earth revolved around the Sun, and not vice versa. This contradicted the official Catholic Church view that Man was the cause for the existence of the Universe, and therefore had to be at the center of creation.

Galileo was unwilling to defend the truth, because, well, it would convince no one if he did so. But later Pascal, Voltaire, Montesquieu, Locke and others gradually changed the world despite the church's constant protests.

Writers like Rushdie are the ones who will eventually change Islam. But I think Islam will change faster, because of technology, like the internet and the world being so much more interconnected. Satellite TV, Internet discussion groups and such will cause a more rapid change than Christianity experienced.

I have no problem with legal consequences for being a bigoted or racist prick.  I applaud hate crime consequences.
 

Ghettoblaster of course does not give the full particulars of the charges made in Germany and the UK. And no matter what they were or were not, that does not justify the attack on Rushdie.
 I get the feeling that Ghettoblaster  has no sympathy at all for Rushdie, because Rushdie is a Muslim.

Let's not pretend this **** is confined to Islam. Progressives are today destroying the lives of people who have different opinions. JK Rowling gave lgbtqrstuv people a homosexual Dumbledore, her reward for writing books about celebrating the differences of others? Canceled for stating the biological fact that men cannot become women. Dave Chappell tackled on stage by a knife wielding queer for making jokes about trans people. A baseball game shot up by an angry Bernie Sanders supporter because he disagreed with Republicans. An idiot filled with Maga rage attempts to shoot up an fbi field office. 

No this issue isn't confined to Islam and it seems to be escalating. This is the result of accepting the patently retarded notion that speech is violence. That having a different opinion or world view makes one less than human. If speech is violence then the logical conclusion is that violence to counter violence is self defense. A **** retarded notion not confined to one particular ideology, faith, or political bend. We need to stop this insanity before it further metastasizes.

A dating, as Tom Lehrer made abundantly clear,, "everybody hates the Jews."

But there are some obvious problems in Islam.  Just read "Infidel" by Ayaan Hirsi Ali or "The Trouble With Islam Today" by Irshad Manji.

Writers like Rushdie are the ones who will eventually change Islam. But I think Islam will change faster, because of technology, like the internet and the world being so much more interconnected. I've read more than a few books on this.
My view is that it will update/reform/civilize due to the women.
They can only be barely second-class people for so long.
They can only watch their sons and daughters be abused/exploited for so long.
They can only live in acceptance of boorish and brutal "husbands" for so long.

If technology helps intrude on this dreadful lifestyle just a bit faster, then good riddance.
They live in lies like any other society...

I don't think the problems are confined to theology. Look at the actions we saw censoring any and all information related to covid19 that wasn't directly coming from Fauci. People were banned and silenced for reposting information from the UK and Canada.  

Censorship is the first step in speech related violence.
