LOLOL.. when we moved up to Maine  from NYC... My parents at the time.. Wanted to play pioneer live off the land....
They were going to grow a garden.. On an old rutted- bad dirt -potato field.
 yea yea yea... of course I was the child labor. lol
maybe it wouldn't have been SO BAD... If something grew?  But it didnt!
just a bunch of weed work...
 Years later.. I learned I could drive up to the local farm stand.. and get veggies.. cheap.. pennies-  no labor.

You folks should have had the dirt analyzed.  It could have been fixed easy enough to grow a garden.  If weeds are growing there, something edible would grow there too.  Doesn't sound like much fun though.  Also sounds like they didn't know how to prep the soil or when/what to plant.  Maine is cold, so it's not like you have a long growing season up there.
