As a little side-note tidbit of information, we don't really need to worry about ICBM's and strategic nukes here in the US and Canada any longer. We have the capability to knock out a VERY HIGH % for long enough our response would likely put an end to continued strikes. This makes it all the more unlikely opponents might choose to strike first as they would be obliterated before they could substantially strike from a distance. We have more to fear from some brain-washed terrorist sneaking one into or close enough to our shores. Still, even a strike on Russia or China would cause the same aforementioned issues here in the US. While it is exceedingly unlikely the US would strike first, it is assured we would do so in retaliation for even a single nuclear strike on our soil, against our forces, or against allied soil. And there is no such thing as nuclear strikes in a limited area, as even a small number of nukes would cause issues as discussed above as the dust kicked up high in the atmosphere would soon cause world-wide calamity..

Already having electric grid, transportation, water and fuel pumping problems, large numbers of people die from unclean water and have serious problems when having to be out looking for food-water. Fuel for fifty mile grocery store trips is already a problem when heating, cooling and real estate tax and rent have hyper inflated.

I'm all set with food. Once all of the Urbanites melt away, we might even grow to appreciate the after effects of a nuclear war. Just look at Chernobyl - ground zero for a nuclear holocaust, yet it is almost livable and quite beautiful. What evidence is there that ants are evolving into some sort of self-aware species?
It seems to me that ants are quite content with their current state of existence.
They may outlive humans, but they seem unlikely to replace us.
For a species to be motivated to launch itself into space, the species must be aware that they are on one of many planets, and that the lights in the sky are not decorations or messengers from some deity.

It is more like 25-30 miles. Which is a circle 60 miles across. To give you an idea Birmingham Alabama and Huntsville Alabama are 90 miles apart center to center. If a 10-20 MTon nuke exploded directly between the two cities the blast radius would just touch the city limits of each. Outside this zone wouldn't be very nice either. Lots of debris and very high heat. Fires everywhere. Most everything burned. Radioactive fallout perhaps 45 miles from the epicenter would cause lots of problems. Thereafter, weather patterns would cause further mayhem downwind. This is 1 strategic Nuke and it would essentially take out half the state of Alabama with further problems outside the 60 mile diameter blast zone. And most don't have a clue how to deal with radioactive fallout. So 2 of these would pretty much obliterate Alabama, an average sized state.
So how many nukes are we dealing with. Well the combined blast radii of just the US nukes is enough to cover the entire land surface area of the planet Earth (not counting ocean surface) 100 times over. Russian's quite a bit more at about 150 times the entire land area of the Earth (see book of lists). China not as much but multiple times as well. And there are other nuclear capable nations, all of which can destroy the surface of the earth at least 1X over. There have been reductions so I'm not sure how up-to-date those numbers are, but you get the picture.
Just detonate in place and the world's toast. Or a snowbank.

You can't live at Chernobyl. You can visit there for a few hours 30+ years after the meltdown. But even that is risking future health risks. If you lived there for a prolonged period of time you would have issues.
