Ukraine stands poised to destroy a major Russian military force at will right now.  The Russian commanders were lured into a trap and sent 25,000 troops into an area backed up against an un-crossable area of the Dnieper river.  These troops are trapped.  Sitting ducks and unable to obtain resupplies, ammunition, food or even more soldiers.

The Ukrainian military is angry at Russia's destruction of their beautiful country, at the rape and murder of their women and children.  Blood lust has grown deep among Ukrainian military officers and troops.  It is believed that these 25,000 Russian soldiers will, in short order, be gunned down and destroyed.  Ukraine does not have the facilities nor the desire to house 25,000 prisoners of war, and they cannot allow these Russians to go free.

This dire scenario for Russian forces has been confirmed not only by pro-Western observers, but more importantly now by pro-Russian sources alarmed by this new turn of events.

NATO Nations fear that Russia may lash out and strike European cities if Ukraine decides to slaughter the 25,000 Russian troops.  In Russia's collectivist mind, it cannot lose this war with Ukraine.  Even if it means the destruction of the world as we know it, those who control Russia would rather die and see their families die than suffer the disgrace of Ukraine emerging victorious over Russia.  The thought of Russia being the butt of jokes from Western and even 3rd-world nations for decades to come is a fate worse than mutual annihilation for the Russians.

Putin will not allow Russia to lose the war to Ukraine without making it painful for others.  Unless, of course, someone with a sharp knife gets to Putin's neck first.

Putin enjoys an 80% approval rating. He would be replaced with someone like minded.

Lots of Oligarchs who were once Putin friends have now ended up dead.  If 25,000 Russians get slaughtered, no telling what would happen to Putin's real approval rating.

I doubt Putin will find much cooperation in such an endeavor.

You're an idiot.

Putin's position doesn't owe itself to the populace,

It is entirely dependent on the cooperation of his fellow kleptocrats.

At this point their interests are divergent.

Russians being slaughtered by nato provided weaponry will only prove his point and justify an escalation. This whole thing should have been avoided through diplomacy.

Putin does not need anyone's cooperation.  Russians will follow Putin's orders or they shall be exterminated.

Too late.  Ukraine is poised to slaughter 25,000 Russian troops.  Russia will either a) back down and figure a way for these troops to become POW's, or b) not back down, and Ukraine will have no alternative other than to slaughter them.

Russia will not back down, and Ukraine will be forced to mow them down.  That's just my prediction, and you know what people say about Poker and Predictions.....

Since when are you an expert on Russia's use of nukes?
Russia's policy has been not to use them at all.
They did not use them in any of the wars of independence of the former Soviet republics.
They did not use nukes in Afghanistan.

It does not take that many loyal people to run a campaign of fear.  Putin knows hot to target men, women, children, parents, employment to get what he wants. Will it ultimately work?  I doubt it.  People who engage in a reign of terror and fear often end up with their head on a poll.

Russian troops are in Ukraine, where they do not belong, because Putin sent them there,
They are free to surrender, just as Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown.
 '
I do not think that Cornwallis' decision to surrender was motivated by instructions from the Crown.
After Cornwallis surrendered, the British government decided not to waste any more money, men or resources on fighting the Americans, and sued for peace talks.

Had Washington slaughtered Cornwallis' troops and sent the heads of every English soldier back to England on a flaming ship as cover for 4 American attack vessels, America would own what is wrongfully called "Canada" today.

Russia has warned they will use nukes. Good enough for me.

Unlike previous retreats from Kyiv and around Snake Island, Russian state media has struggled to play off the debacle as anything other than a defeat. But, rather than admit being beaten by Ukraine, Putin's mouthpieces argue that NATO forces are directly involved in the fight and have beaten them instead. That has led to increased calls for Russia to strike back at NATO allies.
Former commanders of the military alliance have also warned of the risk that Putin could resort to nukes as his invasion falters.

Do you see any scenario where Putin accepts defeat in Ukraine?  We had to nuke the flesh off of Hirohito's citizens 2 times before he would accept defeat.
