This is a little off topic for politics but I saw in my email today that apparently the stick shift will not be offered in automobiles anymore. Automatic transmission works but now just about everything else doesn't. The ever more present gadgets in our cars always have some sort of malfunction. The fridge might be state of the art but I can't tell you how many times the ice maker on my two year old fridge has broken. The light on the stove remains on and the TV Fire Stick has to be continually rebooted. This article in the Atlantic is from 2017 but mentions the new "advancement" of the public restroom. The automatic faucets don't come on and toilets that are "automatic" yet either don't flush or flush 3 times. Do we really need all this progress? Is it really even progress to not turn a knob? Does it save any time or energy? Link to article here.

My life is about .6TB.
I have a 5K life.
The VR viewer is too immersive to be a mere "device".

The best ice cube trays are clearly those made of silicone, and they have not been around long enough to call them "vintage".
You can easily pop the cubes out of a silicon tray without running water over them, as you had to do with the plastic trays. Before that, there were the aluminum trays that had this lever you had to pull to break the ice and get it out of the trays.

Can openers, there is just one best: Zyliss Lock and lift, made in Switzerland. I don't know how old the design is, but it is not old enough to call it "vintage".
Electric can openers need batteries, and batteries need replacing and can damage the device.

Oh- I think that's what i have.. Its not plastic.. But it looks like it. I also got those metal ones you pull back. Those were cool.
It's really funny... because I inherited everything here.. Some of its old-old. Like I have a potato peeler- probably my age.. its STILL better then the new ones.. And Revere ware stainless pots and pans.. Older then me..  Screw these non -sticks they dont last either.

I found your OP to be an interesting observation.  I personally have 2 cars, both stick shifts. And, one motorcycle, which obviously is manual shfit/clutch.
I have only owned one automatic transmission car since college and that was back in 2003 for a couple of years before I totaled it.

When I drive my wife's car, which is an automatic (she can drive a stick well, though), the sucky transmission always has a lag - and it's an Audi.  Freaking thing has a supercharger, but a ******-shift transmission.  Freaking useless!

I am sure that my next car/truck will have to have an automatic transmission - I dread owning such a horrid thing!  I would like to find a 4x4 truck with a stick shift built around 2015 with really low miles on it.  Even that would be hard to find.

Even the C8 Corvette - NO STICK SHIFT, JUST ******-SHIFT!

Well, without sounding crude, Cyndi, you're a woman.  That's why real men call what women prefer to drive (move-a-lever-and-go with no effort) "******-shift".

With a stick-shift (really just a manual transmission), you have full control of the car.  You do not need to break as often.  Gas milage is higher.  The car is lighter and generally more responsive.  The only exception are the extremely high-dollar automatic transmissions in high-end super cars - their response time is as good as a manual shifter.

You can still buy great potato peelers and cookware online, you just have to know what to look for. And of course, it will be expensive.
The best place to look for kitchen stuff is yard sales.
I recently bought a large steel German made pressure cooker, that looks as though it has never been used, for $20. Amazon sells these for over $80, plus sales tax.

Nonstick pots and pans are convenient, perhaps, but of course the Teflon wears off and gets burned or scratched, so they are essentially disposable.  Copper bottomed steel Revere ware and Le Creuset cast iron cookware are basically indestructible.

There are dozens of types of plastic. Ice cube trays are metal, almost always aluminum, or some sort of plastic or silicon (also a type of plastic). I have yet to see an ice cube tray made of anything else. To be useful, it has to be easy to get the ice out of the tray. That would not work with glass or ceramics.

My Subaru Outback has an automatic transmission with paddle shifters, so I can downshift rather than use the brakes and put it into a manual shifter mode, where it has 5 speeds I can shift up and down with.

No one is forced to have an automatic transmission, there are plenty of older cars with standard shifters.
How about crank up windows and manual doorlocks?  Does anyone prefer those?

Automatic transmissions waste fuel via slippage.
Considerable heat dissipated  via the transmissions cooling system is proof that much "work" is lost..
A manual trans takes less HP to turn...too.
Even though many cars have "lock up" torque converters once you reach cruising speed..there is a MPG penalty that comes with the auto trans / fluid drive.
