the poem you speak of calls him an elf as a general reference to his magical and supernatural nature...old english folklore did not percive the 'elves' as little dudes, but mystical native inhabitants of their land who came from some earlier civilization. No, I don't buy the sentiment that Christmas has become too commercial. Christmas is about giving. It's about giving and receiving. Yes, you buy something at the store, and you give it to someone. Perhaps the whole Christmas has become too commercial should be critiqued.
