I'm waiting for some concoction of a story that it was "for the good of the country".

All those incendiaries sent over by balloon from Japan in the course of WWII come to mind.
Thousands were set adrift, only a few were successful and the media suppressed the story.
This was to discourage the Japs from sending any more than they already were.

The media was saving the country by not reporting Hunter the Crackhead.
