Well, to conclude, it is just interesting. Cheaper places attract folks but not so when it comes to WV and WY. The state is losing population, jobs, and income. The population of the state is aging faster than any other state and it is not even close. Lastly, they are going to continue bleeding population until it reaches a point where the other places become too expensive.

It could have a lot to do with the reputation of the locals too. They don't take too kindly to "outsiders" moving in. That attitude alone can stymie an area's growth all by itself.
There are rural parts of quite a few States that fit that bill as well. In WV, it applies to pretty much the whole State.
I know a lot of people that have moved here from other areas, and one of the biggest draws was that it was welcoming.

There is some of that too. I have no problem with living in a rural area. Been looking at moving to the rural places east of Reno, NV for quite some time. Another thing going against WV is that they have a major teacher shortage and it is only going to get worse. Their overly harsh attitude against unions deters those who get the teaching degree in WV. Why deal with the state admin and lower pay when you can move 100 miles in one direction or the other and see a a 25% pay increase and less antagonism from the top?

When I was dating, one of the girls I was pretty serious with raised that issue with me. She was tired of taking the pill. They didn't have Norplant then. I told her no way I'm getting snipped. She pressed me a little and I told her it ain't happening. There were plenty of girls I could have dated, and she knew it. Not so much these days. There has been a big swing against interracial dating. It's a real stigma for a white girl to date a black guy. In my 20's, I considered getting a vasectomy. Not because of politics or having a gf pressure me into it. Just was quite discouraged and thought, "life sucks now and if I have a child.. it is going to suck even more". Needless to say, I did not but I had the money set aside and was ready for it.
