In fact, at every event I have attended the announcement was always a request. There was nobody official going around demanding people stand or remove their hats.

America The Beautiful is not the national anthem. No one cares if you stand or sit for it. There is but one national anthem - The Star Spangled Banner. Actual Americans don't ridicule ancestors for their separate beliefs.
