Before SpaceX, NASA was considering shutting down their program because of the cost of rockets. SpaceX pretty much saved it because they found a way to make reusable rockets and cut costs significantly. However, this leaves an obvious question for NASA. NASA had the best engineers and were under the same technology as SpaceX. How come NASA couldn't figure it out?

NASA was a decent agency during the 1960's and 1970's leading up to and concluding with the Apollo program.  They made some truly remarkable achievements during that era.  Then, they became a bloated bureaucracy, more worried about sustaining their funding than actually achieving anything.  They gave us an era of the useless space shuttle program.  Two decades of lost achievement.  Two decades where we should have landed men on mars and beyond.  Two decades of nothing but wasteful spending.  NASA deserved to be shut down after the shelving of the Space Shuttle program.

If the US is going to maintain military superiority, we do need to invest in space related technology.  The next World War will depend on a superior position in space.  We will need to be able to quickly destroy any enemy satellite and use our space technology to quickly launch attacks against enemy targets. Regan actually got it right in the 1980's.  Clinton, Obama and Biden dropped the ball on making the US superior in space. Trump tried to regain some ground, but he only had 4 years.  That's where we stand today with NASA.

Good post, as always, Skans. Bureaucracy is definitely the reason, probably the only reason. We could have been to Mars by now, the technology could have been developed. They had the tech to build on to make better tech. They didn't. It's unfortunate, though, that we need to use space for defense. It's necessary, and I support it, but I wish we could explore the universe instead. 

@Blackvegetable  do you see Skan's post? This is an example of 'thoughts.' No copy/paste, no incessant questions/demands, no insults. Just good old critical thinking skills.

Actually, I do too. In my heart I am an explorer. We are nowhere near having the tools to engage in manned exploration of anything beyond a few planets and moons in our solar system.  And, due to the design of our Universe we may never be able to actually explore distant planets.  I am not convinced that near light speed travel, let alone traveling at multiples of lightspeed, is possible or even feasible without using more energy than is attainable.

We could be working on technology to get there. However, this is a classic example of how our species is our own enemy. We choose war instead of going forward.

Didn't need to. Don't trust Elon Musk more than 50%. Hell Don't even trust me to lead you into another reality, because I won't. I don't need a reality to understand how kinetic genetics eternally separates lifetimes occupying space now. I figured it out by my own body never same total sum twice since arriving a fertilized cell constantly changing form as shaped by my compounded DNA donors of the previous 4 generation gaps delivered 93.75% of my individual brain being the nucleus of my original form at conception.

Everything else is removing reasonable doubt society made me believe after birth.

Well, I never said "death to all humanity" - just to China.....and parts of Russia.  At my heart, I really am more of an explorer. If so much of humanity weren't such ****, I wouldn't be so inclined to want them destroyed.
