They took a while to regain any sense of purpose post-USSR.
I don't really know what that purpose is anymore though.
Lots of titles and offices need a reason to exist...

It's akin to NASA losing its mission after the shuttle was shut down.
That was the cash cow.
Suddenly they became weathermen. Climate needed WAY more stewardship.
That global emergency will pay the bills until a real mission shows up.

Exactly. That was supposed to be the agreement. They shouldn't even exist today. But of course, the USA found an excuse to keep it intact. NATO is great and profitable business for war. As if the US is going to pass on that kind of profit.
