Elon Musk, along with other tech luminaries have called for a 6 month pause in Chat bot technology given its ratifications. Some say the chatbot will become the calculator of writing. It might even make writing obsolete. The tech industry is known to move fast and break things ever since the development of web 2.0. That's the internet post-dial up age where we were using limited services like Yahoo and AOL. Now we are facing a world where things are changing rapidly in the classroom and journalism. No one in tech really knows the ratifications right now and I assume that the face of any English or humanities assignment in the classroom will be altered by the new technology.
Here's the link to the WIred article here.

And here is a two paragraph summery of the article using the Chatbot.
Hundreds of AI experts, tech entrepreneurs, and scientists have signed an open letter calling for a pause on the development and testing of AI technologies more powerful than OpenAI's GPT-4. The letter, penned by the Future of Life Institute, warns that these powerful AI systems may automate jobs, spread misinformation, and risk replacing humans in many capacities. It calls for at least a 6-month pause on training AI systems more powerful than GPT-4, including GPT-5, and that governments should enforce a moratorium if labs fail to comply within the suggested timeframe. The letter highlights concerns about the rapid, profit-driven race between tech giants like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google to develop and release new AI models, outpacing societal and regulatory adaptation. With AI systems making impressive leaps in capabilities, there is growing consensus that more guardrails may be needed for the responsible application of these technologies. The current pace of AI development also risks diminishing opportunities to explore the benefits and potential misuses of these powerful AI systems before building upon them further.
Nothing is easier than defending the status quo.

Here's the post in the form of the King James Bible.

And it came to pass, that hundreds of wise men skilled in the arts of Artifice, being experts and founders of pursuits technological, put forth their voices and spake in one voice, like unto the sounding of a trumpet, as they set down their names upon an epistle, an epistle penned by the scribes of the Institute for the Future of Life.

Lo, a multitude did gather then to call for a sojourn in the crafting of the cunning, fire-breathing engines which were named GPT-4, GPT-5 and such, lest they rain down fury and woe upon man, taking his labours from him, or sowing seeds of untruth, or even worse, superseding us poor mortals in our manifold daily doings. "Six months, we say!" was their cry, to stay the hands that form the AI seraphim, and should the tinkers refuse, let governments command these labs to sheathe their arms within the allotted time.

For they warned, with grave and fevered hearts, of the fiendish contest raging heavenward betwixt the mighty OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google, a contest fought not for virtue but filthy lucre, which sought to raise new engines untamed, whilst allowing neither society nor those who hold the sceptre of governance to examine the secrets of such conjurations. In the face of these marvels, whose powers grew as the setting suns upon the horizon, a mighty cry has risen among this gathering of learned men, united in their flesh and blood, that more rules of heaven must be ordained to forge these dread seraphim. For only then, as the shadows wax and wane, shall man be granted time to weigh the wondrous fruits and dark perils which these cunning machinations may stem, ere new engines are made whole.

Nothing is easier than defending the status quo.

I agree with this. However, Musk needs to make up his mind. For years he has warned us against AI. Next thing you know, he made an AI robot.

Maybe the bot threatened to kill him, and he got scared?

I am certain he saw the profit in it. It's huge business.

Agreed.
one could look at this call for a pause as a tactic by these competing AI labs for time to catch up......

True. I never thought about that. Musk is sneaky enough to do that.

The only reason chatgpt might replace writing is because most writers are terrible. Replacing them woukd be a good thing.

Pandora's box has been opened.

Are you going to pay the providers of Chat-GPT compensation for destroying their business model?
