Nixon decided to open up to China on advice from Henry Kissinger (who has always been pro-Rockefeller pro Exxon Big Oil) because he wanted to end the Vietnam War in something that could be seen as something other than an utter defeat. He felt that he could accomplish this by bombing North Vietnam back to the Stone Age, but he needed reassurances that China would not invade Vietnam in support of Hanoi, as had happened with Korea.
There was all that ping pong diplomacy and finally Nixon met with Mao and he got his reassurances that China would stay on the sidelines.
His plan, however, did not work. After the Tet offensive, it became impossible for Nixon to draft enough competent troops to support the South. The young men that Nixon needed for soldiers ran away to Sweden and Canada or just avoided the draft.
There was all that ping pong diplomacy and finally Nixon met with Mao and he got his reassurances that China would stay on the sidelines.
