In this calculation, the “normal” temperature of the Earth is assumed to be 57.2°F, and that is simply compared to temperature reported by all of the stations to obtain the absolute temperature deviation from “normal” at that moment.
The basis of this number comes from NASA GISS itself, from their FAQ page as seen in August 2016 as captured by the Wayback Machine.

1) Global warming is not an event that begins and ends within a 100 year span... The earth has warmed and cooled a NUMBER of times over the last billion years or so, and each event has lasted MILLIONS of YEARS. So, trying to use a 50 or 100 year span to draw conclusions about "Global Warming" in general... IS IDIOCY...
2) Global warming is like the stock market... NOTHING goes straight up, or straight down... the stock market goes UP and DOWN every day, but the LARGER trends take MONTHS or YEARS to develop. So, making decisions about buying or selling stocks because of ONE 15 minute period within 1 day of trading, is STUPID... Now, think about each day in the stock market, as if it were 1000 years in "Global Warming" time... and you begin to see why using 100 or 200 years, to make decisions that affect MILLIONS of peoples lives... is also IDIOCY !
3) Over the last 20-25 THOUSAND years, the earth HAS warmed... Glaciers that extended into Illinois and New York state are gone, the Great Lakes have formed from PART of that ice sheet, and there is evidence that sea levels have risen 100's of feet during that period... SO, the last 100 or 200 years of the industrial revolution, had NOTHING to do with Global Warming... THIS warming started a LONG time ago... LONG BEFORE the "Industrial Revolution"... and TRYING to connect the two, is JUST an EXCUSE for politicians to find ways to separate MILLIONS of people, from their money !!
