Technology, automation, and the internet has made life somewhat easier and less unknowns. In 1985...there were not nearly as many office jobs that demanded little to no physical exertion.

There are still janitors, kitchen staff, etc. today. But in 1985, there were not as many call center jobs nor as many in real estate, finance, insurance, and software. The numbers bear it. If you do not believe it.. look at QCEW data

The point is that there are still plenty who do the manual labor jobs. However, as a whole the office jobs are a greater percentage. It is changing now but for awhile, there was this narrative that you could not earn a comfortable living working the manual labor jobs such as electrician, plumber, factory worker. You would toil away in a dead end job, end up with a bad back or bad knees, and have nothing to show for it. That was the narrative.
