Actually, the federal government is intended to be the servant of the states. There should be very limited exposure to the federal government for ordinary people - limited to use of the federal courts, basically.

This is exactly WHY they want to do away with the Electoral College, and even the Senate. 
All they care about, is gaining more power. 
 

When I learned about the electoral college, in the seventh grade, the explanation given was that in 1790 the founders had a difficult time traveling. So the 13 states (plus provisions for more states) would conduct elections for President and then in those 13 states the proper electors would cast votes for the wining candidate, and off to Washington DC went a horse and rider to Congress, where the votes were tallied.

Until Donald Trump the danger, was faithless electors.
