I use a generic avatar because I cannot find a way to upload a .jpg or .png from my computer hard drive.   When I try it asks for the URL.  What?  My files are not in a cloud.  They are right here in my computer.   So does anyone know how to upload a file from my computer to use as an avatar?

Thanks....

Upload a pic from your computer to postimages.org and then copy the direct link url into the link off-site avatar box in your profile settings under control panel.

Thanks for the response but I guess that means it is not possible to simply upload from my computer to this site.  I dislike the idea of involving a third party who, no doubt, will want full access to my computer in return for the favor.  Well the generic avatar will have to do.

postimages.org is the same third party host that this site uses and you don't have to create an account to use it. No email, personal info, nada.

If you want to maintain an album on the site, then yes you have to create an account, but not just to host a few pictures. I've used them for years and never had any issues. To each his own though.

Just click upload, select the pic from your hard drive, and then copy the direct link url below the pic once it uploads. Pretty simple really.

OK thanks for the update.   I'll check it out.  I am the ultra private type as you probably guessed.  I use VPN, Ad blockers and Java controls.   I HATE marketing with a purple passion.

I hear ya. I have several emails that I use for ****, and one that I keep clean for the same reasons.

If you do upload a pic to postimages, you want to copy the direct link into the "link off site" box under "edit avatar" under the profile tab in your user control panel.

I'm pretty sure it lets you crop the pic to fit as well after you link it to the site if you want to.

Other websites, forums, allow direct upload from an applicant's computer.   So easy.  So uncomplicated.  So convenient.  But..... this direct method is not what marketer's like.  They want access to our personal information so they can sell it to others who will blitz us with directed adverts.   To them I say "no thanks".   In the world of today the word "free" is the most mis-used in the dictionary.   There is no such thing as "free".   The gullible always pay a price.

I stand behind that statement... it may be computer stuff - we don't understand! That's ridiculous and suspicious.... management here has defended me- time and time again. silly.

He doesn't want a third part host to use his data to direct market to him through the internet with the info, which is understandable.

The thing is, without creating an account at postimages.org (which you don't have to do to use it) then they don't have any of your personal info... at least not that I can tell.

The best I can tell, they don't even use cookies like most every other website does... including this one.

Meh, it is what it is. If he doesn't want to use it, then he has every right not to. Who am I to complain.

when I lost my avatar- it was a ton of work getting it back.
I'm not good at computers so it did take a lot of thinking... I'm good at pics- but not good at capturing url's? so i had to upload to get the url...
I wish we could get it from my pictures- on windows... like I do every place else.. but being suspicious is just plain silly! He could just ask cp  and he would put it in there for him... This was years ago.

Yeah you are right.   If there is one thing I've learned in my 81 years it's that "free" is the most mis-used word in our language.   Just because something doesn't cost money doesn't mean it's free.  Free means "no conditions".  Period!!!

I went to that https://postimages.org/terms site and the first thing I saw was "register or login"  This means one DOES have to have an account.   Marketing is the single greatest evil on this planet, right after wokeness.  I'll have nothing to do with it.

I use a powerful, Switzerland based, VPN, a power adblocker and I identify each an every bit of Java scripting that accompanies a search and I never, never, never use any Microsoft or Apple or Android product for ordinary use.

i have no intention of registering and opening an account with this image service.  I read their terms of service.  It's enough to make one's head explode.

Other websites or forums that I use are so simple.  Go to profile and upload an image from your computer.  That's it. No registering and logging in.  No terms of service to comply with.  No requirement that access to one's computer be given.  And... and... and... no worries about being blitzed with targeted adverts for the rest of my life.

If Postimage works in cooperation with this website then that means this website gets a kickback.   I won't be a part of that.

No way am I going to fall into that trap.   The generic avatar will have to do.

I've never registered or created an account with postimages.org

When I go to the site, this is all I see...

Image
If you look at the bottom of the reply box on this forum, where it says "add image to post", that link takes you to the postimage.org upload page as well.

I see where you have the option to register and create an account on the link page, but it's just that... an option, not a requirement. It could be that because you are using a VPN that they are requiring it, who knows.

If you're not comfortable using the service, then by all means don't use it. I was just relaying information as to how to get an avatar up if you wanted one.

OK I understand you but I can see that since this method (a short cut it seems) is available it simply means that since we are on this forum it must mean that we have registered here and logged in.  This gives them (postimage) the same data on us that they would have if we otherwise went to their website and registered.

So...   No offense to you, the end result is the same.  We are opening the door for adverts and someone is getting money for it.

Nothing is free.   I'd like to see the contract that this forum owner has with postimage.   I'd bet my life money in return for persons to sent adverts to is involved.

No offense...   I know the way the world works.   I've been in it for a long time.

I get the same upload page from postimages whether I'm logged in here and use it through this site or not. I've used postimages long before even joinng this site and it was the same then as well. I've never been required to enter an email or register in either case... and I have never received any correspondence of any type from postimages either.

It's kind of curious that you are concerned about a site like postimages possibly getting your info from this site, yet didn't have any problem providing said info to this site to join in the first place. Wouldn't your VPN shield you from anyone getting your personal info in either case anyway The owner of this site could just as easily sell your info without ever involving postimages, could he not?

Also, if the site owner generates revenue from click throughs to help keep the site open, what's the problem? Posting here doesn't cost the members a dime, but it does cost the site owner hosting fees every month. Why shouldn't he try to recoup his costs?

I'm not trying to be confrontational, just trying to understand your reasoning is all.

A VPN alone does not shield a user.   One must first sign up for that service which is usually separate although provided by the same company.

The underlying premise here is the general mistrust of human beings.   They are, almost all of them, profit motivated.  In my 81 years I have trusted and then been "had" more than a few times.  I know perfectly well what others are capable of.

You ask "what's the problem"?   My answer is simple.  If it done openly, with full disclosure before, then it's OK.  It's only when we are denied information that it hurts.   Have you ever been conned?  No.  Good for you but if you ever have are you will feel it for a long time.    I have lied to many times.  I don't like it.

Kindly arrange for "postimag" to contact me personally.  I will ask them if any part of their business plan has anything to do with them getting money.  If so will they disclose the details.  If they receive compensation, no matter how small an amount, from me using their service from within this forum then I would like to know about it in advance.

Don't waste your time.  I already know the answer.   I don't like being used.

Thanks.... conversation over.

Just an FYI... from postimages privacy policy page.

What personal information do we collect from the people that visit our blog, website or app?

When registering on our site, as appropriate, you may be asked to enter your email address or other details to help you with your experience. PostImage does not require registration in order to upload images, so it does not record any email addresses if you are uploading anonymously (i.e. without signing in).

When do we collect information?

We collect information from you when you register on our site or send a message to our Tech Support via the support form.

https://postimages.org/privacy

They do use cookies, which nearly every website on the net does, but of course you can disable them in your browser, or in your case, use a VPN to negate their effects.

If they required registration to upload pictures, I would be right there with you... but this is not this case in this particular instance.

I know you stated that the conversation is over, and I understand if you don't wish to reply... but I just wanted to toss this out there in closing.

An email is all they need.  From that they can get together with the provider, in most cases, and find out all they need to know.   Don't you know that selling individual profiles is a big business?   How could you have missed that?   It's all perfectly legal but that is not my complaint.  My complaint is about the lack of being open and honest about their business practices.  That is why I use the word "con".
