THIS TRANSGENDER RIGHTS MOVEMENT GOT ITS START IN THE EARLY 1950'S WITH THE PUBLICATION OF CHRISTINE JORGENSENS AUTOBIOGRAPHY. JORGENSEN WAS BORN MALE AND UNDERWENT SEX REASSIGNMENT TO TRANSITION TO FEMALE. HE WAS THE FIRST OPENLY TRANSGENDER.
In 1973, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) recognized transgenderism as a mental disorder. In the 1980s and 1990s, transgender people increasingly began to challenge this classification. In 2010, the American Psychiatric Association removed the diagnosis of “gender identity disorder” from the DSM, replacing it with “gender dysphoria.”
The transgender rights movement has made significant progress in recent years. In 2015, the US Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. This ruling paved the way for transgender people to have their marriages recognized by the government.

In 2016, the Obama administration issued guidance stating that transgender students have the right to use the restroom that corresponds with their gender identity.
