I don't know if I hate all of Cali.  I've only ever been to LA and surrounding cities. I'm sure there are some beautiful areas.  However, its the LA people that irritate me the most.  Mostly stupid, self-entitled fake pricks.

This is in the very northeastern corner, Modoc County. They were the one and only county to defy Gavin Newsome's covid mandates. The northern 1/3 or so is basically the same as what you find in NV, UT, ID, MT, WY, and SD.

I was only commenting on the people I've met and done business with in and around LA, not those that have the same disdain for Newsome that I have.

Just pointing out that in most of the west, once you get away from the few metro areas the folks are quite Conservative and the spaces wide open. The eastern half of Oregon is as Conservative as any place in America. Even the reviled CA.. take away 9 of their 58 counties and the state is purple, if not red.

you are rational enough to know that big cities are not going away. They exist for a reason and will continue to exist. My suggestion has always been to have folks (if they can) try to move the smaller or mid size cities. So instead of having where 80% of your population (random number) is concentrated in one area and therefore the big city elites dominate your politics, move out to the country. Now there are limits. I do not expect to most reasonable folks to live in a place like Austin, NV. But what if they were 50 to 100 miles from the city and in a smaller but more conservative city/county?

Two words:  Work and Kids. One reason people live near larger cities is because they want higher paying jobs, are not self-starters and want to work for larger companies.  The other reason is to have their kids educated with "like-minded" people and access to baby sitters/child care.

People might like having access to things like live theater, concerts, professional sports, and places to eat/go out.  But, that's not really why most tend to gravitate to a big city.  They either lack the resources or experience to strike out on their own, or they crave the safety of being a cog in a big machine.

I freely admit that I prefer the stability and predictability of working for someone else. Owning my own small business.. have pondered it a few times but then I do some number crunching/cost benefit analysis and then think it is not worth it. Besides the only businesses that I would feel confident in operating would be a microbrewery or some kind of IT consulting.

Forget the microbrewery.  IT Consulting is a good bet.  Especially if you can get in with an internet telephone supplier and be able to set those up for small offices and/or design and develop web pages and social media content.  ****, there's tons of things you can do in that arena to make money. 

Here's the deal.  When you work for a big company, you lack the freedom and mental energy to develop your own portfolio of investments, be it real estate, stocks, bonds, metals, franchises or whatever else.  When you have your own company, then it becomes paramount that you also concentrate on outside investments for stability.  It just becomes a natural part of your daily routine.  You will, in effect, be running multiple businesses.

On the other hand, if you have a cush job, a better than decent salary, and loads of time (and autonomy) to invest, then that can be a really good gig too.
