The University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index jumped to 72.6 in July, topping the 65.5 expected and rising 13% from 64.4 in June. It's reached the highest level since September 2021.
"The sharp rise in sentiment was largely attributable to the continued slowdown in inflation along with stability in labor markets," said Joanne Hsu, University of Michigan's Survey of Consumers director.
Sentiment is now halfway between the all-time low of 50 in June 2022 and the February 2020 prepandemic reading of 101, she pointed out.

Miss Charlotte taught all our seventh grade class fifty years ago about economic data such as the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index so we’d not grow up ignorant hillbillies.  We wuz well educated, hillbillies..Image

Day by day economic data comes in that portends the doom of Trump (or any other Republican) in November 2024 unless there comes a recession.

Optimistic consumers buy stuff. They go on trips.  They plan new house additions.  They load up their credit  cards buying their brats Christmas.

And with each new advance MAGA sinks lower down into the sewers of hatred, despair, and despondency such a vile moral system requires.

Ok. Out west, we do not have the intense rivalries. I guess too many other things to do other than attending sporting events.
