The University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index jumped to 72.6 in July, topping the 65.5 expected and rising 13% from 64.4 in June. It's reached the highest level since September 2021.
"The sharp rise in sentiment was largely attributable to the continued slowdown in inflation along with stability in labor markets," said Joanne Hsu, University of Michigan's Survey of Consumers director.
Sentiment is now halfway between the all-time low of 50 in June 2022 and the February 2020 prepandemic reading of 101, she pointed out.
