Trump plans to claim that he only tried to overthrow the government because Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell, John Eastman, and the rest of the weirdos he surrounded himself with said it was very cool and very legal. Because who wouldn’t be led astray by a guy leaking hair dye, a woman ranting about dead Hugo Chávez, and a lawyer who bombed out of traffic court swearing that the vice president has the unilateral authority to toss out electoral votes?

Don't know about him, but it isn't my job to defend Trump.
I will point out that advice of counsel is a legitimate and valid affirmative defense. I will also point out that the DOJ does not get to decide which legal advisor someone has to use. There could be 1,000 attorneys/scholars giving the same advice and 5 giving the opposite advice...the individual can follow the advice of the five. That allows them to attempt the advice of counsel defense. The success of that part of their strategy is a matter for the jury.
