The quote below was from Lincoln. However, to avoid any accusations of cherry picking, let's put it in context. Lincoln only wanted to abolish slavery to preserve the union. It was in the way. He never advocated for their equality. He abolished slavery, he never allowed for their rights like white people. It was only a necessity. 

Why is he always considered a hero when he only wanted slavery abolished for political reasons, not for moral ones?

As for his popularity winning the god damned Civil War and freeing four million black slaves had a hell of a lot to do with it.

You cannot judge past cultures by today's moral standards.
Same is true for the future.

I learned when I was a child that Lincoln was racist and would never have outlawed slavery where it existed, except for Fort Sumpter.  

That’s the reason he’s on Mount Rushmore.

He didn’t like black people, but died setting four million blacks free.

They were not troubled in the least over whether this would hurt the Republican Party in the rest of the country. They wanted to make—for their own satisfaction, if for no one else’s—a display of the fact that they had found and were enjoying membership in one organization that was secure against integration.

Washington literally forged the nation at Valley Forge

  Being signed  over to various an anti all creation eugenics corporation communes that the taxpayer citizen must subsidize after six hundred thousand American citizens die is not freedom.  Lincoln and others should have argued in the courts that the slaves could learn to read contracts and could not be considered as animals or partial animals in the law instead of attacking the civilian population.  As it is 2023 humans (carbon units) of all skin colors can enjoy less legal protection than an animal.
