In the Missouri Ozarks only three mammals can be caught by an unarmed boy on foot, possums, skunks, and porcupines. You’d have to kill a porcupine with a rock, and be extremely hungry to kill a skunk by bashing its head against rock.
But I was a little bitty boy when I caught my first possum. I’d no more eat a possum than I would a dog.
Missionary Baptists will eat possum and coon, and to be polite I used to sample the coon, when I was among the Missionary Baptists to be polite.
It’s sort of like greasy roast beef, kind of.
But have you ever seen a possum crawl out of a dead cow?

Possums will eat almost anything, and keeping clean is the furthest thing from their minds. Chances are before a possum wandered into your yard, it feasted on the neighbor's trash. It most likely ate rotten meat covered in hair and coffee grounds followed by rancid mayonnaise mixed with soggy paper towels.
