What the hateful bastards who despise Joe for breathing don’t realize is he lived only on his and Jill’s salary for 44 years.  That fire was a major life change for them.

On a partial loss like my friend had, his family lived in a motel for a month while his house was repaired and they tried getting all the smoke smell out.

At least 90% of household goods were ruined.  They had to replace them all. And the insurance was a nightmare, every little thing had to be appraised.

True story

My father died at age 52 September 1971 of sepsis from a bone he unknowingly swallowed and doctors misdiagnosed until the infection was too advanced to save him.

I was 13 and Mama was 45 when we buried Daddy in Plum Grove.  She’d join him in 2010 but we had no way, to see the future.  I watched the dirt shoveled on his vault, so I’d never forget.

We had a huge stack of firewood to heat with but propane was 32 cents a gallon.  

I tried to figure out how to turn off the four pilot lights in the propane furnace in the basement but couldn’t do it.  We’d resolved to only burn wood in the Ashley wood stove with an automatic damper.

Burned forever in my memory is my beautiful 45 year old mother in a pretty dress blowing out all four pilot lights on the central furnace.

(Thank God for thermocouples. )

I didn’t know how to sharpen the double bit axe.  So I spit the wood with a dull axe.

And we got by just fine, although some cold mornings there’d be frost on the inside of my bedroom window.   
 

Then on one of the coldest nights of the year 1972 in January I decided to bank the fire with a huge Osage Orange log I could barely fit in the stove, and then shut the damper tight.

I awoke with Mama screaming Get Out Get Out Get Out!!!

She grabbed my big parka threw it on  me and shoved me out into the front yard and she called 

Russell Madison 

I could see my Mama inside the house with smoke all above her head on the phone.

On the roof the chimney shot fire maybe six feet high.

And then she came outside, and hugged me, and we cried, and we were going to lose everything we owed in the world,,,,,

And Russell Madison and Gene Griggs arrived and climbed up on the roof and put a wet blanket over the chimney and the flue fire instantly went out.

We opened all the widows. Lit the propane furnace.

Put out some fans.

And those men played pitch with us until dawn to make sure the wood paneling around the stove pipe was fully out.

Russell Madison died last year, and I preached his funeral, although I’m no preacher.

My first words were, Russell Madison was the first man in this town I ever met, not afraid to say he was a Democrat!

And the rest of the service was just Russell stories.

A doctor friend of mine had a house fire about thirty years ago the fire department put out and saved the house except for one room.

As he said later, if that happens again I’m not calling the fire department until the roof caves in.

If they are a total loss you get a huge check.

If they have smoke damage and one room is burned it’s a nightmare.

Not to mention the fire was so big, he watched the firefighters put it out from DC where he was doing Meet the Press.

The flue fire in my home burned for maybe fifteen minutes in January 1972.

Since our home was uninsured at the time, we had to buy all new clothes that we couldn’t wash the stink out.

The ceilings were black.  Out on the sun porch we scrubbed the pine roof clean, and the rest of the house needed scrubbing and two coats of paint.

We replaced the entire carpet as Mama’s school check allowed.

It’s still there.

My tenants took up a section of the carpet in my old bedroom and asked me, did you know the floor in your bedroom still smells faintly of smoke?

Yep, I said.

Teach that boy to be careful how he loads the stove.
