What was the content of the emails?

I wish, I could play a guitar all up and down the neck.

I do own several guitars, and when I go to hillbilly jam sessions I take my 2005 model Martin HD-28. My dear Baptist friend David bought it used for $500 and then when he converted to be a Mennonite he gave it to me. I always take it in honor of David but really I’m just showing off my Martin :



David was a baritone and if he could find any girl that could sing a note on key, David would pick my Martin all up and down the neck playing melody notes and runs while I hit chords on my Guild, and we’d let that girl feel like she was Priscilla Mitchell to David’s Roy Drusky.

David died in 2016 and I miss him a lot, but never more when I sing a duet with a girl using David’s guitar that I can only play chords on. There are lots of runs and licks in my Martin HD-28 I know, but I can’t play them.

David was born in 1956 and I was born in 1958 and both our mothers were gorgeous, knockout, outrageously beautiful creatures when they were young, who until the day they went to the same nursing home about the same time could sing like caroling angels.

In 1965 our mothers both taught us to sing Roy Drusky’s lead on Yes, Mr Peters so they could be the Priscilla Mitchell.

It was cute as hell, little boys singing that song all over the Ozarks.

And Kentucky, Tennessee, Oklahoma and all the other states and all over the world.  

It was the Achy Breaky Heart catchy tune of 1965.  Not only was it a monster hit they performed it on the Ed Sullivan Show with millions watching.

And it made Mr. Peters have a secondary meaning until this day.

It’s still one of the most requested karaoke songs and makes the children of Roy Drusky and Priscilla Mitchell (Reed) a handsome living.

David’s father was a one eyed Korean War veteran who left his left eye in the floor of a tank that rescued him in Korea.  Oh Lord, could I but hear Brother Billy tell that war story one more time.

Brother Billy was one of the best Baptist ministers I’ll ever hear preach and his blonde  wife Sister Rose had an  enormous set of jugs and could play the piano like Moon Mullican and sing Once a Day like Connie Smith,,,,just tear it up.

And as for my Daddy?  He married the lead pretty girl singer on the stage of the 1946 Camdenton  J Bar H Rodeo that had over a hundred thousand in attendance.  Sort of a 1946  hillbilly Woodstock, they claimed.

Imagine a born beautiful Patsy Cline, and that’s who taught me Yes, Mr. Peters, and a thousand other songs.

Mama could tear up Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray but she never smoked one cigarette, ever.  She demanded my Daddy quit and he quit cold turkey, and never regretted it.

Our mothers couldn’t be friends in the nursing home.

Rose usually didn’t recognize David and my mother couldn’t walk six feet without losing her breath.

One day I came to the noon meal early and Rose was singing Once a Day to the ceiling.

Mama said it’s easier on you to see me die this  way, but I wish I was like Rose and had no idea of what is going to happen to me, before I join Daddy.

What is so tragic and so wrong with the Fox News Republicans is they’ve drained every drop of goodness out of conservatism and replaced it with Try That in a Small Town hatred.
