I can remember it like it happened last week, but I was four years old and had my set of World Books, in 1962 when Mama said let’s go outside.

That silver maple tree that’s sixty feet high now was only about twice as high as Mama then.  She was 36.

She said to me what do you see interesting we can look up in your new World Books?

I said what kind of tree is that Mama, and she said look up, and what are those?

There were three contrails of jet planes up in the sky.

I forgot all about that silver maple tree, and started asking questions about big jet airplanes, six miles high.

I knew Daddy had to spend a lot of time washing and cleaning and inspecting the Grade A milk barn, so the first thing I had her look up was airplane maintenance.

I’ve met people that tell convincing stories about being in the womb and being born but I can’t remember a lot of vivid memories, until I was eight months old in December 1958.
