They are part of the problem but not ALL.. simple enough. Teachers can't undo the apathy and bad habits that they pick up at home. They spend vastly more time with the parents than at school.

Aside from sleeping, you think children spend vastly more time with their parents than teachers?      

It's great to strive for objectivity/impartiality but if you don't have a 50+IQ, what's the point?

But.. that teacher is in full control of that student showing up.. correct?

And you honestly think that a teacher can undo the bad habits and apathy that 25 to 30 students learn at home? I did not picture you as someone who is so positive and pollyanna.. Just shows that you never truly know someone.

I don't know if we can blame the teachers. It's likely that these kids are disruptive and rude all day in school. No education is possible in that kind of environment. The teachers were stuck babysitting, not teaching. That isn't their fault. The babysitting is the parent's job. Educating is the teacher's job. Parents aren't doing their job.

No, but they can avoid assisting that crap.
Instead, as an institution, they work selfishly for their own benefit.
The students bring in whatever attitude they want and are allowed to do so.
Because that's easier than confronting the little bastards it is now as routine as a security guard ignoring the shoplifters.

Parents get a free pass, it appears. The teachers are somewhat at the behest of parents. Parents call up and complain.. and mostly get what they want.

Which is really too bad.
However, the schools have made "teaching" waaaaay more than the 3 "R's".
Getting rid of some weird **** or at least making schools prioritize Readin', Ritin', and Rithmitic would uncomplicate the relationship.

There is no way to prove this but its my guess that even if you made the curriculum 100% free of social justice, home economics, etc. and made it all reading, writing, and arithmetic.. the scores would only marginally improve. Maybe 3 or 4 of these schools would have students that are proficient or at least in the short term.

           It's clearly not a 1-solution problem...... 
And for a variety of reasons, teachers have lost control of the classrooms --- and the little animals have been cut loose to run the zoo... You can no longer properly discipline them for fear of lawsuit, loss of job, or being set upon by an enraged parent who thinks Junior can do no wrong.  

           It also doesn't help selling the message there's no need to compete or strive for excellence anymore -- because everyone is entitled to the same outcome regardless of talent or effort...

Ya but people dumb enough to join private sector unions, so be it. Public sector should not exist.

I just think schools have way over-stepped their bounds.
Long ago.
It became almost inevitable that they set themselves up as babysitters.
Couple that with lazier (or busier, depending on your view) parents and here we are.

Neither side serves the young very well it would seem. At least there is ammo for such an argument.
