Very true. Even as a kid, I learned more at home than I did at school. I luckily had (at that time) very good public schooling in my home town.
My parents were left behind me very early on...
Self-initiative, motivation, etc. These are HUGE factors.
Both sides of the equation have about the same influence on a kid's future.
One may overpower the other so easily.

at the low income high school here in Reno.. they have a truancy rate that far exceeds the others. I would say that it is difficult to teach and therefore impact the life of a student if they are not there. Also.. lots of drugs connected to this school. Teachers can't stop the students and their parents from being the consumer, seller, or manufacturer of these drugs.
