Who Is the Russian Banker Who Met With Jared Kushner?

On Monday, newspapers reported that the Senate Intelligence Committee will interview Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s advisor and son-in-law, over meetings he took after the election with Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak and a prominent Russian banker, Sergei Gorkov.

Kushner met with Kislyak he was a member of the Trump transition team and still a private citizen.

After that meeting, which took place in early December, Kislyak requested a second, to which Kushner sent a deputy, to whom Kislyak conveyed he wanted Kushner and Gorkov to meet.

Kushner and Gorkov met at a later date.

Gorkov is the head of the Moscow-based Vnesheconombank, a government owned development bank that is sanctioned by the United States for Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea.

Vnesheconombank describes itself as funding “major investment projects” — like Russian President Vladimir Putin’s pet project, the 2014 Sochi Olympics — and “provid[ing] support” for Russian enterprises.

It is also the bank at which Evgeny Buryakov worked under “non-official cover” as a banker while actually working for Russian intelligence (the U.S. attorney who announced he pled guilty back in March 2016 was Preet Bharara, whom the White House fired earlier this month).

Russian Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev, whose recently exposed alleged corruption was the impetus for massive protests across Russia on Sunday, sits on the bank’s supervisory board.

Previously, Gorkov was the deputy chairman of the executive board of Sberbank, Russia’s largest state bank, most recently in the news for hiring Trump’s longtime lawyer to defend it in court.

Gorkov graduated from Russia’s Academy of the Federal Security Service — that is, of the FSB — in 1994, and is also a recipient of the Medal of the Order of Merit for Services to the Fatherland, second class.

White House spokesperson Hope Hicks told the New York Times that the meeting, which lasted 30 minutes, “really wasn’t much of a conversation,” but that Gorkov communicated his interest in maintaining an open dialogue.“

Mr. Gorkov, who previously served as deputy chairman of the board at Sberbank, Russia’s largest state-owned bank, said in a statement issued by his bank that he met with Mr. Kushner in his capacity as the then-chief executive of Kushner Companies, his family’s sprawling real estate empire.

This news must have ousted Fox News boss Roger Ailes rolling over in his bed.

At the end of 2016, Bill O’Reilly had hosted the number one rated show in cable news for 16 consecutive years, and loved to brag about it.

On Super Bowl Sunday, O’Reilly was rewarded with an exclusive interview with incoming President Donald Trump.

Now, only two months later, Reilly has fallen into a Trump slump.

Last week the number one show in cable news belonged to Rachel Maddow on MSNBC.

O’Reilly wasn’t even number one in his time period.

That honor went to Chris Hayes on MSNBC.

Even CNN with about 482,000 total viewers beat O’Reilly last Friday after Trump’s health care bill went from the halls of Congress to intensive care.

Maddow on Friday attracted about 690,000 viewers at 9 p.m. compared to 450,000 for O’Reilly at 8 pm, where Chris Hayes on MSNBC was drawing 466,000.

So not only was O’Reilly no longer on top; he wasn’t even number three for the night in cable TV news.

Maddow was not atop the heap in the total viewership.

She also was number one in the key 25-to-54 year old demographic that advertisers covet – for the first time in history.

House Intel Committee cancels meetings amid calls for Nunes to step down.

The House Intelligence Committee has scrapped the rest of its meetings this week as calls intensify for Chairman Devin Nunes to step down following his admission that he met with a secret source at the White House to review intelligence reports.

The decision to cancel the meetings was confirmed on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" by Rep. Jim Himes — among the Democrats on the committee demanding that Rep. Nunes recuse himself from the inquiry into alleged Russian meddling in last year's election.

Himes said an intelligence committee meeting Monday was canceled, as well as an open hearing set for Wednesday and an unrelated meeting Thursday.

"Not only has this investigation sort of had a shadow cast on it, but the committee's been put into suspended animation," Himes said.

On Monday, Nunes' spokesman confirmed that the chairman met with a source at the White House grounds to look at reports purportedly showing President Donald Trump or his aides were "incidentally" swept up in foreign surveillance by American spy agencies.

Nunes, a California Republican who was a member of the Trump transition team, initially told reporters last week that he had seen such reports, but didn't elaborate on the source.

He's now under criticism for failing to tell the top Democrat on the intelligence committee about his White House visit.

It's also unclear why Nunes would even go to the White House to seek a secure location to view classified material when he can do that at the Capitol.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer refused to comment Monday when asked why Nunes was on White House grounds.

Congress is investigating Trump's unverified claim earlier this month that Trump Tower was wiretapped and a larger probe into whether Russia interfered in the presidential election and may have colluded with members of the Trump campaign.

Nunes' visit to the White House has clouded the already complicated inquiry.

Sen. Lindsey Graham said Tuesday on TODAY that Nunes at the very least has "put his objectivity in question" and "lost his ability to lead."

"He's gone off on a lark by himself, a sort of Inspector Clouseau investigation here," Graham said, referring to the bumbling detective of "The Pink Panther" series.

Rep. Eric Swalwell, a Democratic member of the House Intelligence Committee, said on "Morning Joe" that Nunes has compromised the investigation by not properly sharing information.
