Our Florida hurricane correspondent provides this brief update from Fort Myers and Cape Coral:
Irma passed very slightly to the east of Fort Myers, which was actually worse for the city, since it saw nothing but eyewall for several hours instead of getting a respite in the eye. Still there is little major damage – uprooted trees, a few houses damaged by falling trees, localized flooding, signs damaged or knocked down, widespread power outages (though LCEC has done a very effective job at restoring electricity to critical installations). The vicious storm surge everyone feared largely did not materialize; even Sanibel and Captiva suffered little significant damage. No doubt damage and fatalities would have been worse had a large surge occurred. Miami, Naples and the Keys suffered the most of what damage there was, and only the latter was really smashed.
Six deaths are attributed to the storm. Three emergency responders were killed in car accidents, a fourth death was a civilian in a car accident, and a carbon monoxide poisoning from a Miami man who ran a generator in an enclosed space. Only one person was killed by the storm itself,

AS I said, the destruction in the islands was due in large part to very poor construction methods. They scare the uninformed to death with storm surge predictions and 99% of the US population has no understanding of what surge actually is. As it closed in, it was obvious that it was overblown. On one hand you have the media screaming that we all bees gonna die, but while simultaneously looking at actual real time NOAA data, you go WTF are these idiots babbling about.

Luckily two things that the weather forecasters said could happen did happen.
It made landfall in Cuba, which lessened the intensity, and it wobbled to the West, so it did not hit Miami straight on.
Those two things could just as easily not happened and it could have hit Miami as a Cat 5.
Rush told his listeners that the warnings about Hurricane Irma were a scam to promote a climate change agenda and boost bottled water sales.
That was a totally irresponsible thing to do.
But you will never admit that.

Even if I believed that, and I don't, maybe when a Cat 5 hurricane is bearing down on us, it's not the right time to be hyperbolic.
Maybe it's the time to do the responsible thing, put politics aside and tell your listeners that they should prepare for the worst, but hope for the best.

I didn't hear either one of them say that it was just the media's attempt to advance their climate change agenda and the retailer's way of selling bottled water, batteries, etc.
