Jeff Sessions reportedly shut down the idea of a Trump-Putin meeting. There’s just one problem.

During his confirmation hearing in January, Attorney General Jeff Sessions denied having knowledge of “any evidence that anyone affiliated with the Trump campaign communicated with the Russian government during the course of the campaign.”

In a now-infamous exchange, Sessions, answering a question from Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) about what he’d do if evidence emerged that the Trump campaign had been in touch with Russian officials, said, “I’m not aware of those activities.”

Less than two months after Sessions’ testimony, the Washington Post broke news that Sessions had in fact met with then-Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak at least twice during the campaign.

The revelation about Sessions misled senators led to him recusing himself from overseeing the FBI’s investigation into the Trump campaign for possible collusion with Russia, and the appointment of Bob Mueller as special counsel.

But this week, we learned that Sessions’ knowledge of the Trump campaign’s contacts with Russia went beyond his meetings with Kislyak.

According to numerous reports and former campaign adviser George Papadopoulos’ guilty plea for making false statements to the FBI, Sessions and Trump participated in a March 2016 conversation about whether Trump should meet with Putin — a meeting in which Papadopoulos made clear he could arrange a Trump-Putin rendezvous because of his “connections.”

Both CNN and the New York Times report that Sessions played a key role in nixing the proposed meeting.

On Wednesday, CNN reported that Sessions “shut down the idea” after Papadopoulos pitched it during the March 2016 meeting — a get-together Trump proudly highlighted on Twitter.

Citing “a person in the room,” CNN reports that the Putin-Trump meeting idea was “raised by George Papadopoulos as he introduced himself.”

Papadopoulos, who Trump name-dropped as one of his foreign policy advisers just days earlier, told the group “that he had connections that could help arrange a meeting between then-candidate Trump and President Putin,” according to details of his guilty plea made public this week.

The timeline laid out in the plea agreement indicates Papadopoulos had just returned from Europe, where he had met with a Kremlin-connected professor who took an interest in him because of his role with the Trump campaign.

CNN’s latest reporting tracks the account of the March 2016 meeting contained in a New York Times report published on Tuesday.

The Times, citing an interview with a Trump campaign aide who were in the room for that March 2016 meeting, reports that Trump listened as Papadopoulos proposed the meeting with Putin and even asked questions.

But then Sessions, “as the campaign’s top national security official, spoke vehemently against the idea, asking others not to discuss it again.

Mr. Trump did not challenge him, the former aide said.”

Regardless of whether or not reports about Sessions’ role during that meeting are accurate, Papadopoulos’ guilty plea, along with the CNN and Times reports, indicates he knew campaign surrogates were in communication with Russian officials.

Recall, however, that Sessions denied having such knowledge during his testimony to Congress.

The inconsistency between Sessions’ testimony and what we now know about the Trump campaign’s contact with Russia is particularly problematic for the attorney general, given that he was under oath.

But the sequence of events detailed in Papadopoulos’ guilty plea — events further detailed by CNN and the Times — also pose problems for Trump.

As ThinkProgress has detailed, during a news conference in February, Trump said he was unaware of any campaign aides who had contact with Russians during the election.

His denial is impossible to square with what we now know about the March 2016 meeting of his national security team in which both he and Sessions were informed that a campaign adviser was in touch with Russian officials and could even arrange a meeting with Putin.

I guess the Terror of Twitter doesn't know that the federal courts in Manhattan have a great track record for prosecuting terrorists.

The man who set off bombs in Chelsea and New Jersey in September 2016 was convicted in Manhattan last month, while Khalid Sheikh Mohammed still awaits trial at Gitmo.

I guess he also doesn't know that things at Gitmo are such a mess that a U.S. Marine General was just sentenced to 21 days confinement and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine by a judge.

How nice that he calls our justice system a 'joke' and a 'laughingstock.'

Senior Congressional leaders are turning up the heat on their investigation into the Obama unmasking scandal after recent reports of obvious abuses from former UN Ambassador Samantha Power that cannot be ignored.

The recent admission from Susan Rice that she unmasked Trump’s associates to understand more about a meeting between UAE crown prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan and senior Trump aides that took place late last year also renewed their focus on the former NatSec Advisor.

The Washington Free Beacon reports:

Congressional leaders and other insiders told the Washington Free Beacon that the investigation into the Obama administration’s unmasking campaign is gaining greater steam,

even as the federal probe into alleged collusion with Russia drags on.
“The misuse of intelligence information by members of the Obama administration is a serious issue that requires an exhaustive investigation and accountability,” Rep. Ron DeSantis (R., Fla.), chair of House Subcommittee on National Security,

told the Free Beacon.
The investigation into these unmasking efforts continues to focus on top Obama officials, particularly Power, who is said to have had little need to unmask such sensitive classified information from her perch at Turtle Bay.
Rep. Sean Duffy (R. Wis.), another Republican member closely tracking the unmaksing scandal, encouraged his congressional colleagues to move past the Russia probe in pursuit of the facts about Obama’s potentially illicit spy operation on Trump associates.
The Democrats better be careful what they wish for.

Ironically, the Dems have dug a deeper hole for themselves with this Russia investigation as more damning information is uncovered about the Obama admin.

“Congress is determined to follow the facts wherever they may lead us. And, ironically, the most damning revelations of the Russia investigation thus far incriminates the Obama administration,” said the official, who was not authorized to speak on record. “Susan Rice’s admission to widespread unmasking against Trump associates may just be the tip of the iceberg. We are going to get to the bottom of this.”

The Free Beacon also reported that former officials are very disturbed by the mind blowing number of people Samantha Power unmasked.

The hundreds of unmasking requests by Power—which amount to nearly one a day—are extremely suspicious, the former officials said.

As The Gateway Pundit previously reported, an attorney for Trump Jay Sekulow and his partner at the ACLJ Jordan Sekulow broke down Samantha Power’s unprecedented unmasking requests on their Friday radio show.

Jordan Sekulow pointed out that Power’s unmasking was crammed in the last few weeks or perhaps days of the Obama administration which means she was unmasking dozens of people OR MORE in a single working day.

Sekulow puts Power’s unmasking requests into context by comparing it to other UN Ambassadors of the past.

“Her number of requests are unprecedented in the history of UN Ambassadors who also have the position to unmask,” Jordan Sekulow began.
“No other UN Ambassador has ever even made half of the requests Power made in their ENTIRE CAREER, let alone a few months.”

Ex-British spy paid $168,000 for Trump dossier, U.S. firm discloses.

A Washington research firm paid a former British spy’s company $168,000 for work on a dossier outlining Russian financial and personal links to Donald Trump’s 2016 election campaign, the U.S. firm said in a statement on Wednesday.

Although it was public knowledge that Fusion GPS paid for the work, the amount had not been disclosed.

Fusion GPS hired former MI6 officer Christopher Steele to collect information about Trump and his advisers.

Fusion GPS’ statement said it had told Congress about how $168,000 was paid last year to Orbis Business Intelligence, Steele’s company.

The money paid to Orbis was taken from $1.02 million it received in fees and expenses from the Perkins Coie law firm, the statement said.

The law firm represented the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, although initial research by Fusion into Trump and other Republican primary candidates was commissioned by a conservative website.

In an Oct. 29 message posted on Twitter, President Trump said the dossier had cost as much as $12 million, without providing evidence.

She was after all receiving much new intelligence about Russia's role in the election, some of which suggested coordination with Trump associates.
National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster has concluded that Rice did nothing wrong, according to two U.S. intelligence officials who spoke to me on condition of anonymity.
That might explain why Trump has yet to declassify more information on the prior administration's unmasking requests.
