Tourism to U.S. under Trump is down, costing $4.6B and 40,000 jobs.

Travel to the U.S. has been on the decline ever since President Donald Trump took office, and new data shows the slump translates to a cost of $4.6 billion in lost spending and 40,000 jobs.

The latest data from the National Travel and Tourism Office shows a 3.3 percent drop in travel spending and a 4 percent decline in inbound travel.

The downturn has also caused America to lose its spot as the world's second-most popular destination for foreign travel, ceding to Spain. (France is in first place).

International tourism to the U.S. began to wane after Trump took office, leading to a so-called Trump slump.

Experts say that Trump's proposed travel bans and anti-immigration language have had a negative impact on the U.S.'s attraction for foreign visitors, in addition to a weaker dollar and heightened security measures.

“It’s not a reach to say the rhetoric and policies of this administration are affecting sentiment around the world, creating antipathy toward the U.S. and affecting travel behavior,” Adam Sacks, the president of Tourism Economics, told The New York Times.

Report: Felons, people under foreign influence got national security clearances.

A Defense Department report obtained by NBC News found that 165 defense contractors had their initial security clearances revoked last year after further investigation linked the recipients to problematic or illicit activity, including questionable financial transactions, influence by foreign governments and even felonies like pedophilia.

The report, which will be released Wednesday, shows how it is possible for people who have been compromised or who have criminal backgrounds to slip through the cracks of the preliminary background investigation and obtain access to sensitive national security-related information.

The low threshold for granting what is known as an interim security clearance should be cause for alarm inside the Trump White House, says Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., ranking member of the House Oversight Committee.

Cummings cited the report in calling on the committee's Republican chair, Trey Gowdy, to help him investigate the "troubling irregularities" with the security clearances held by President Donald Trump's senior aides.

The report captured data from 200,000 applications for secret or top secret clearance by defense contractors over the past three years, many of which were not fully adjudicated until 2017.

It found that 486 applicants had their clearances denied or revoked.

Of those applicants, 165 had slipped through the initial round of vetting and been allowed access to sensitive information.

The most common reason for denying a security clearance, the report concluded, was related to the applicant's finances, with over 370 applicants being denied clearance for "financial considerations."

Felony charges were the cause for revoking 63 clearances, and evidence of foreign influence or foreign preference was found in 56 applications.

In 151 of the cases, applicants were granted an initial security clearance that was later revoked when it was discovered the applicant withheld information.

In one example, a person given interim secret clearance in 2015 was discovered in 2017 to have been found guilty of raping a child prior to applying for the clearance.

The process for obtaining an interim clearance is the same for defense contractors as for senior White House aides.

The FBI is responsible for reviewing the criminal history, financial records and foreign contacts of applicants for the White House, the Department of Defense and other agencies with employees that require clearance.

As of last week, President Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner had been operating with an interim security clearance rather than a permanent clearance for almost a year, according to media reports.

Cummings has pressed the White House to disclose information on the status of Kushner's clearance as well as the clearance of Michael Flynn, Trump's former national security adviser, who was later fired and has now pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI.

In a letter to Gowdy Wednesday, Cummings said the "extremely troubling data" from the Department of Defense should compel Gowdy to subpoena the White House on the status of senior aides' clearances.

"I believe that serious deficiencies in our nation's security clearance processes represent an urgent and grave risk to our national security," Cummings wrote in the letter to Gowdy.

Gowdy's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A White House spokesperson said, "As we have said in the past, we do not discuss security clearances."

A former official at the FBI, which vets candidates for security clearances, said background investigations can be held up for months because of backlogs and complex backgrounds.

Someone like Kushner, who has never served in government and has complex business dealings, can take longer to vet.

Still, the official said, people at high levels of government are usually expedited.

Interim, or provisional, security clearances are necessary for many agencies to fill their jobs while the final process plays out, the official said.

Under U.S. law, the president has the authority to grant security clearance to whomever he sees fit, regardless of the FBI's findings.

A former White House official who served in the Obama administration said it was the policy of that White House not to override the recommendations of the FBI when it came to hiring decisions for White House positions.

Iowa’s Steve King said it was “worse than Watergate.”

Freshman Florida congressman Matt Gaetz, who has already called for the firing of Mueller, is of the mind that “there are people who will go to jail” over the contents of the memo.

Mark Meadows of North Carolina said in an impassioned floor speech last week that he was “shocked to read” the contents of the memo.

“I would think that it would never happen in a country that loves freedom,” he lamented, as he joined calls for the memo’s release.

Over the weekend, Gaetz told Fox News’ Jeanine Pirro — a Trump favorite who has earlier called for a “cleansing” at the Justice Department and the FBI — that disclosure of the classified House memo “will shock the conscience of the country”

The right-wing-propaganda complex immediately went to work — aided, hilariously, by an army of Russian bots that made sure the hashtag #ReleaseTheMemo remained a trending topic on social media.

Before long, Donald Trump Jr. became a leading advocate for the memo’s release, and WikiLeaks soon after jumped in on the action, promising up to $1 million in cryptocurrency to whoever had the courage to leak the document.

On Tuesday — almost predictably — Alex Jones announced on Twitter that he had come into possession of a copy of the Nunes memo.

But, also predictably, it turned out that all he had was a court order that has been publicly available for several months.

Steele’s specter is really the only reason Nunes’s latest move is playing so well in conservative circles, which are likely to scream even louder if a set of talking points conveniently handpicked by Nunes sees the light of day.

Any mention of Steele’s work or his dossier sends the Infowars set into a blinding rage — no matter how much of it may have already been independently corroborated by law enforcement or intelligence services.

The dossier’s more salacious parts may remain unverified, but by now there should be no doubt that the FBI suspected there were links between Russia and the Trump campaign several months before Steele shared his investigative work with U.S. authorities.

There’s no indication Nunes is committed to releasing all of the pertinent information behind the warrant, and releasing just the bits and pieces he likes would only tell a part of the story — the one he wants the public to believe.

The potential for disinformation explains why the FBI, which almost never comments on political controversies, has asked to see the memo to implement corrective measures if needed.

They’ve only gotten crickets.
