It’s a talking point former campaign manager and now senior White House adviser Kellyanne Conway leaned on while defending him on the lead up to the inauguration in an interview with CNN’s Chris Cuomo about the notorious incident where Trump mocked New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski’s disability.

“You have to listen to what the president-elect has said about that. Why don’t you believe him?

Why is everything taken at face value?” Conway said, amid claims that Trump wasn’t actually making fun of Kovaleski’s congenital joint disorder when he did a crude impression of the reporter on the campaign trail.

“You can’t give him the benefit of the doubt on this and he’s telling you what was in his heart?

You always want to go by what’s come out of his mouth rather than look at what’s in his heart.”

This belies the commonly held belief that what comes out of the president’s mouth is an indication of what’s in his heart.

Like Conway, Pence is pushing the idea that Trump deserves the benefit of the doubt when he’s blown multiple opportunities to earn it.

Pence also demonstrated his shameless fealty to Trump by arguing reports an alleged affair between Trump and Daniels — which the Wall Street Journal claims left a paper trail regarding a $130,000 payout to buy the Good Will Humping star’s silence before the 2016 election — are “baseless.”

Either Pence is that committed to debasing himself for his boss, or he has no idea what “baseless” means as Daniels discussed the affair in great detail in a 2011 In Touch Weekly interview that had been shelved until last week.

But then, what else would you expect from a guy who ratted out his frat brothers when campus officials busted their party for having a keg?

Top congressional Democrats have asked Facebook and Twitter to investigate whether Russian bots and trolls helped spur an online campaign to release a controversial classified memo that some Republicans say shows bias in the FBI's Trump-Russian probe.

The hashtag "#ReleaseTheMemo" exploded on Twitter last Thursday, according to the Alliance for Securing Democracy, a bipartisan national security group tracking 600 Twitter accounts linked to Russian influence operations.

Senator Dianne Feinstein and Representative Adam Schiff, both of California and both top Democrats in Congressional committees probing Russian interference in the 2016 election, on Tuesday called on the social media giants to investigate.

“If these reports are accurate, we are witnessing an ongoing attack by the Russian government through Kremlin-linked social media actors directly acting to intervene and influence our democratic process,” they said in a letter to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

"Public reports indicate that accounts linked to the Russian government are again exploiting Twitter and Facebook platforms in an effort to manipulate public opinion," the letter said.

Republican staffers drafted the memo in question, according to Feinstein and Schiff. Details are limited as it remains classified, but the Washington Post reported the memo alleges the FBI and Justice Department used information from another notorious document—the dossier alleging collusion between President Donald Trump and the Kremlin—to surveil Trump campaign adviser Carter page in 2016.

As government closure reaches day three, it emerged that President Donald Trump's supporters on Twitter got a boost from the Russians in blaming Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer for the federal shutdown.

Both Republicans and Democrats used the social network to criticze opponents for the shutdown, which started Saturday after Congress could not agree on a temporary budget deal.

As of 10 p.m. Sunday evening, #SchumerShutdown was the top trending hashtag promoted by Russian propaganda bots on Twitter, according to a bipartisan national security group.

The Alliance for Securing Democracy found that #SchumerShutdown had exploded among Russian influence networks. The security group tracked approximately 600 Twitter accounts believed to be operated by Russian-tied groups and found the shutdown hashtag had surpassed popular Russian bot hashtag #ReleaseTheMemo, reported The Hill.

RUSSIAN TROLLS USE FOX NEWS' SEAN HANNITY TO UNDERMINE MUELLER'S TRUMP PROBE, REPORT SAYS

Kremlin-linked trolls are using content from Fox News host Sean Hannity's website to bolster the campaign to undermine Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into the Trump campaign's alleged collusion with Russian election interference, according to a report Wednesday.

Hannity's website has ranked among the top domains shared by a network of Kremlin-associated Twitter accounts in recent weeks, Mother Jones reported, using data from the Hamilton 68 dashboard compiled by the nonpartisan Alliance for Securing Democracy.

On December 20, for example, after Representative Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) claimed on Fox News that the FBI had worked against Trump's presidential campaign, Hannity tweeted, "CONSPIRACY: GOP Lawmakers Says FEDERAL CONSPIRACY to Prevent Trump Presidency."

That day, Hannity's website was among the top 10 shared by the network of Russian trolls monitored by Hamilton 68.

This happened again on January 18 when House Republicans called for Representative Devin Nunes (D-Calif.), who was accused by Democrats of attempting to derail the Mueller probe, to release a memo that supposedly provides evidence the FBI and the Justice Department conducted improper surveillance in relation to the Russia investigation.

At the beginning of his program that night, Hannity directly addressed Mueller: "I have a message tonight for the special counsel, Robert Mueller. Your witch hunt is now over. Time to close the doors."

Within the next 24 hours or so, analysis from Hamilton 68 showed the hashtag #releasethememo had been tweeted by 600 monitored Kremlin accounts approximately 3,700 times.

These accounts exist in addition to nearly 3,000 Russian trolls uncovered by Twitter in November 2017.

Critics of Fox News have accused the right-leaning news network of skewed covered of the Trump administration's alleged Kremlin ties.

Carl Bernstein, one of the reporters who helped expose President Richard Nixon’s involvement in the Watergate break-in, said last year that Fox News was "abetting a cover-up” in relation to Mueller's probe.

"The commentators that you are hearing and showing are not open in any way to the best obtainable version of the truth, to facts, context, who seem to be oblivious to the serial lying of the president of the United States and members of his family and staff—they are abetting a cover-up," Bernstein said in a CNN interview.

Veteran broadcast journalist Tom Brokaw went as far as saying Fox News was on a "jihad" against the FBI in order to discredit the Mueller probe during an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.

Brokaw said, "Fox News... is on a jihad right now on the whole question about whether there’s fairness about this or not. The whole assault is on the institutions."

Fox News is one of the only news outlets President Donald Trump routinely praises.

Sarah Sanders tried to dismiss the latest school shooting in 3 seconds, and it got worse from there.

At the beginning of Wednesday’s White House press briefing, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders spent a mere three seconds acknowledging the victims of America’s latest deadly school shooting — one at Marshall County High School in Kentucky that left two students dead.

But NBC’s Peter Alexander circled back to the topic during the last question Sanders fielded. Alexander asked Sanders what President Donald Trump is doing to prevent school shootings, especially considering the fact that there have already been 11 school shootings so far this year and we’re not even through with January.

“On Tuesday, there was a high school in Kentucky; Monday a school cafeteria outside Dallas; a charter school parking lot in New Orleans as well — there have been 11 shootings in schools in the first 23 days of this year,” Alexander began.

“In October, after the Vegas shooting, you said it was an unspeakable tragedy from that podium.

You said it was a day for consoling survivors and mourning those we have lost, but you said there’s a time and place for political debate.

What has the president done in the time since October to prevent any of these shootings from taking place?”

The question is a difficult one for Sanders to handle, as Trump hasn’t done much of anything to stop school shootings. The president — whose election effort received more than $30 million from the National Rifle Association — has made clear he’s not a fan of stronger background checks, and thinks the problem of gun violence can only be solved by more guns.

So Sanders quickly tried to pivot from Alexander’s question. Instead, she attempted to give the president credit for the slight decrease in U.S. violent crime that occurred during his first months in office.

“The president believes that all Americans deserve to be safe in their schools and their communities,” she said. “We’ve had two years of increased violence prior to the president taking office. We’ve tried to crack down on crime throughout the country.”

Sanders’ response didn’t address gun violence in schools at all. When Alexander tried to follow up, Sanders grew impatient and attacked him.

“The fact that you’re basically accusing the president of being complicit in a school shooting is outrageous,” she said.

As Alexander noted, there was a good deal of hypocrisy in Sanders’ attack against him.

Her objection to a reporter allegedly “accusing the president of being complicit in a school shooting” comes just days after the Trump campaign released an ad accusing Democrats that stand in Trump’s way of building a wall along the southern border of being “complicit in every murder committed by illegal immigrants.”

Shortly after the briefing ended, President Trump responded to the latest deadly school shooting with a “thoughts and prayers” tweet.

All these thoughts and prayers don't seem to be working.

And yet today, you openly give a “mulligan” to a white Republican man so riddled with depravity, so littered with extramarital affairs, so unapologetically vile, with such a vast resume of moral filth—that the mind boggles.

And the change in you is unmistakable.

It has been an astonishing conversion to behold.

With him, you suddenly find religion.
With him, you’re now willing to offer full absolution.
With him, all is forgiven without repentance or admission.
With him you’re suddenly able to see some invisible, deeply buried heart.
With him, sin has become unimportant, compassion no longer a requirement.
With him, you see only Providence.

And white Evangelicals, all those people who have had it with you—see it all clearly.

They recognize the toxic source of your duality.

They recognize this all about white, Republican Jesus, not dark-skinned Jesus of Nazareth.

And I know you don’t realize it, but you’re digging your own grave in these days; the grave of your very faith tradition.

Your willingness to align yourself with cruelty is a costly marriage.

Yes, you’ve gained a Supreme Court seat, a few months with the Presidency as a mouthpiece, and the cheap high of temporary power—but you’ve lost a whole lot more.

You’ve lost an audience with millions of wise, decent, good-hearted, faithful people with eyes to see this ugliness.
You’ve lost any moral high ground or spiritual authority with a generation.
You’ve lost any semblance of Christlikeness.
You’ve lost the plot.
And most of all you’ve lost your soul.

I know it’s likely you’ll dismiss these words.

The fact that you’ve even made your bed with such malevolence, shows how far gone you are and how insulated you are from the reality in front of you.

Loyalty Is Not What the FBI Director Owes the President | National Review

The FBI director, like all law-enforcement officers, takes an oath to uphold the laws of the United States.

It is not a loyalty oath to the president.

The rule of law demands that enforcement decisions be made based on what the Constitution and congressional statutes dictate, not on political considerations.

FBI historians like myself know that, since the 1970s, bureau directors try to maintain a discrete distance from the president.

This tradition grew out of reforms that followed the often questionable behavior of former FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, who served from 1924 to 1972.

The guidelines state, for example: “Initial communications between the Department and the White House concerning pending or contemplated criminal investigations or cases will involve only the Attorney General or the Deputy Attorney General.”

DOJ Tells Nunes It Would Be 'Reckless' To Release Memo Without Review.

The Justice Department (DOJ) on Wednesday warned lawmakers not to publicly release a memo purporting to detail surveillance abuses by the U.S. government for fear it will harm national security and ongoing investigations.

Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd, in a letter to the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), said the Republican push to release a memo that they say reveals political bias at the FBI and DOJ would be "extraordinarily reckless" without a review by those agencies.

"We have also heard that [the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence] is considering making the classified memorandum available to the public and the media, an unprecedented action," Boyd wrote in the letter.

In the letter, Boyd also appears to argue that such a disclosure would violate an information-sharing agreement that the Justice Department reached with Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.).

"Additionally, we believe that wider distribution of the classified information presumably contained within your memorandum would represent a significant deviation from the terms of access negotiated in good faith by the Department, HSPCI, and the Office of Speaker Paul Ryan."

The DOJ official goes on to say that while the Justice Department is unaware of the purported Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) abuses detailed in the memo, officials hope lawmakers will provide more information so that investigations into the claims can take place.

"Though we are currently unaware of any wrongdoing related to the FISA process, we agree than any abuse of this system cannot be tolerated," Boyd said.

"Indeed, we do not understand why the committee would possibly seek to disclose this information without first consulting the relevant members of the Intelligence Community."

Republicans in Congress have been demanding the release of the memo, which some members say detail "shocking" abuses by the U.S. government.

The memo also reportedly reveals political bias in the federal investigation that lead to the investigation into Russia's election meddling and possible collusion by the Trump campaign.

The House Intelligence Committee voted last week to allow House lawmakers to view the memo in secure locations, but reportedly denied access to the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Republicans have since called for the wider release of the contents of the memo.

“I’m here to tell all of America tonight that I’m shocked to read exactly what has taken place,” House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) said in a speech on the House floor.

“I thought it could never happen in a country that loves freedom and democracy like this country.

It is time that we become transparent with all of this, and I’m calling on our leadership to make this available so all Americans can judge for themselves,” he said.

The dotard told reporters that he is looking forward to being interviewed by Mueller, and he would do it under oath, which would mean before a grand jury.

“He’s ready to meet with them, but he’ll be guided by the advice of his personal counsel,” Cobb told the Times, adding that Mueller’s team was working out “arrangements” with Trump’s personal representation.
