A lot of the private sector flourished due to tool making, ship and plane construction, and even hollywood. They made a lot of films during that era. War spending IS Government spending and yes a lot of women worked. My mom made Wright Cyclone Engines for bombers. Worth Note though, us imports between 1935 and 1950 were quite low and likely would have not been high without the War.
