The Hill: We Are ‘Reviewing’ and ‘Updating’ John Solomon’s Ukraine Columns - A BIT LATE

A day after conservative columnist John Solomon claimed political newspaper The Hill stood by his reporting as he threatened to sue his critics, Editor in Chief Bob Cusack informed Hill staffers that the paper was reviewing and updating Solomon’s columns.

With Solomon’s Ukraine-related columns coming under fire during impeachment testimony, Cusack said in an email that even though Solomon left The Hill earlier this fall it was taking steps to scrutinize his articles.

“Because of our dedication to accurate, nonpartisan reporting and standards, we are reviewing, updating, annotating with any denials of witnesses, and, when appropriate, correcting any opinion pieces referenced during the ongoing congressional testimony,” Cusack wrote.

“As previously stated, the views expressed by contributors are their own and not the views of The Hill.”

Following complaints from staffers about his reporting, Solomon was moved to The Hill’s opinion side in the spring of 2018.

Cusack concluded his email by referencing Solomon’s tendency to send full-drafts of his columns to allies prior to publication.

“We reiterate that we do not condone sending material out before publication,” he wrote.

Fox News contributor John Solomon, formerly a columnist and executive vice president for The Hill, has emerged in the impeachment hearings as a key figure who pushed conspiracy theories that President Donald Trump used to pressure Ukraine to investigate a political opponent.

The Hill’s Editor-in-Chief Bob Cusack announced on Monday morning that the outlet will be reviewing and correcting Solomon’s columns as necessary.

In his columns, Solomon repeatedly laundered disinformation from Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani to push the false narrative that Ukraine interfered in the 2016 presidential election on Democrats’ behalf, smeared former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, and falsely claim that former Vice President Joe Biden withheld aid to Ukraine to shut down an investigation into a company his son Hunter was associated with.

Multiple witnesses have testified in the impeachment inquiry that Solomon’s columns contained information that was made up and were based on “non-truths.”

On Monday, CNN media reporter Oliver Darcy posted on Twitter an email from Cusack which announced the Hill will be “reviewing, updating, annotating with any denials of witnesses, and when appropriate, correcting any opinion pieces” of Solomon’s that have been referenced in the impeachment inquiry.

Or, to be more precise, a Politico story from Jan. 11, 2017 is dominating Fox News host Sean Hannity.

Under the bylines of Kenneth P. Vogel and David Stern, Politico published an investigation into efforts by Ukraine to tilt the 2016 presidential election.

As the story notes, those efforts were rinky-dink and fruitless, especially compared with the intervention of Russia, which flooded social media with material — posts and ads galore — and hacked into the emails of Democratic officials.

“The Ukrainian efforts had an impact in the race, helping to force Manafort’s resignation and advancing the narrative that Trump’s campaign was deeply connected to Ukraine’s foe to the east, Russia,” notes the story.

“But they were far less concerted or centrally directed than Russia’s alleged hacking and dissemination of Democratic emails.”

This if from the Politico story that Hannity loves to cite:

Except both stories had major defects. The State Department called Lutsenko’s allegations against Yovanovitch “an outright fabrication.” And Lutsenko eventually backed off, retracting his claim in April that the ambassador had given him a do-not-prosecute list.
