According to State Police, Olm, who lives in Wild Acres, was showing his gun collection to his son and 11-year-old nephew, Hunter Pederson.

Investigators said, while showing the guns off, Olm pointed his Glock 27 pistol at at his nephew's forehead and pulled the trigger.

The gun fired and hit Pedersen just over his right eye. The boy died on scene.

"You should handle every gun with a manner that it is loaded," Lieutenant Christopher Paris, with the Pennsylvania State Police, said. "That's any safe firearms protocol. This is a terrible tragedy."

Gowdy said on MSNBC today that fellow Republicans should not fundraise off of the Benghazi attacks, stating: "Yes, and I will cite myself as an example. I have never sought to raise a single penny on the backs of four murdered Americans."

Like their counterparts in the media, the main Republican Party campaign apparatuses are actively fundraising off of Benghazi.
The Republican National Committee has a donation page asking Republicans to demand "the truth about Benghazi" by contributing money.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee asks Republicans to "donate today" because of Benghazi.
And the National Republican Congressional Committee has a fundraising page stating: "You're now a Benghazi Watchdog. Let's go after Obama & Hillary Clinton. Help us fight them now."
The page features an image of President Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton with the text, "Benghazi Was A Coverup. Demand Answers."

Both the National Republican Congressional Committee and various right wing media figures are routinely invoking Benghazi to ask followers for money.

Yes, you should handle every gun as if it were loaded, and if this jackass had been required to take some kind of a gun safety course before he was able to purchase a firearm, perhaps his nephew would still be alive and he would not be headed to prison.

Nebraska Senate Nominee Says Religious Beliefs Can Justify Breaking Any Law

“Our right to the free exercise of religion is co-equal to our right to life,” according to the campaign website of Ben Sasse, a Nebraska Republican who won his party’s nomination to the United States Senate on Tuesday.

The question of when religious belief exempts believers from following the law is at the forefront of our national debate right now, with the Supreme Court poised to decide whether religious business owners can refuse to offer birth control coverage as part of their employer-provided health plans, even when doing so would violate federal law. Yet, even the plaintiffs before the Supreme Court acknowledge that religious liberty is not an absolute right to violate any law at any time. As the crafting chain Hobby Lobby says in its brief to the justices, the government may limit religious believers actions when it uses“‘the least restrictive means of furthering’ a ‘compelling governmental interest.’” This is the standard set by federal law, although there is some uncertainty about how the justices will interpret this legal standard in its Hobby Lobby decision.

Sasse, however, apparently believes that this law does not go far enough, even if the Court gives Hobby Lobby everything it is asking for. His proposed rule — that government cannot require someone to act counter to their religious beliefs “under any circumstances” — would mean that literally any law could be ignored by someone who held a religious belief counter to that law. According to National Geographic, for example, “[h]undreds, if not thousands, of women are murdered by their families each year in the name of family ‘honor,’” and while this practice “goes across cultures and across religions,” some of the perpetrators of honor killings are motivated by their religious faith. Under Sasse’s formulation of religious liberty, a person who killed his own sister because he believed he was under a religious obligation to do so would be immune from prosecution for murder.

Similarly, religious beliefs have been used to justify discrimination against racial minorities, women, and LGBT Americans at different points in American history.
In an opinion upholding Virginia’s ban on interracial marriage, a state judge wrote that “Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. And but for the interference with his arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages.

The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix.” Former Mississippi Gov. Ross Barnett offered a similar view in 1960, claiming that “the good Lord was the original segregationist.” The conservative Bob Jones University drew a similar connection between religion and racism to justify excluding African Americans entirely until the early 1970s, and then to justify a ban on interracial dating and marriage among its students.

ThinkProgress contacted the Sasse campaign to offer them an opportunity to clarify whether the candidate truly believes that any practice, including “stoning adulterers or putting to death those who work on the Sabbath” should be allowed if it is justified by a religious belief. As of this writing, we have not received a response.

In a fund-raising letter from Senator Rand Paul — on the outside of the envelope, to be precise — President Obama is brazenly misquoted. See that “quote” in the lower right-hand corner of the envelope?



Yeah, that’s pretty scary. Except he never said that. The first part of this quote was taken from his speech concerning the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. But the part in the brackets is pure fantasy. The President never said that. Here is what he DID say:

“In the coming weeks, I’ll use whatever power this office holds to engage my fellow citizens, from law enforcement, to mental health professionals, to parents and educators, in an effort aimed at preventing more tragedies like this, because what choice do we have? We can’t accept events like this as routine.”

Sounds a little different when it’s correctly quoted, doesn’t it? But the real quote doesn’t cut it with the gun-nut crowd. Especially not

But that’s not the only weird thing about this fund-raising appeal. See the return address? A Post Office box in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Rand Paul is a Senator from Kentucky. What’s the deal? It seems that PO box is the address for… Saber Communications (aha!). Michael Rothfield’s company. The same guy who is on the NAGR Board of Directors. You don’t have to be an Einstein to figure this one out.

Will this come back to bite Rand Paul in his Teabagging ***? We shall see. But, until we find out, we can at least smack him (and Saber Communications) down for misquoting the President just to scare stupid gun owners. Hopefully, the gun owners who aren’t this dumb will remember this cynical attempt to frighten them.

Armed ‘Sovereign Citizen’ Terrorist Nabbed in Courthouse Takeover Attempt

Authorities shot and killed a heavily armed self-proclaimed “sovereign citizen” outside of a Georgia courthouse, in yet another display of how America is going utterly insane.

Earlier this week, the DOJ released a report that announced they would be re-establishing a committee devoted to investigating domestic terrorism and the political right went nuts.

Early this morning, the political right proved why the committee is necessary.

The so-called “sovereign citizen” arrived at the Georgian courthouse in Forsyth County Administrative building armed with an assault rifle, a bulletproof vest, zip-ties, smoke grenades, and, according to authorities, an intent to take hostages.

Forsyth Sheriff Duane Piper told the media that the shooter, Dennis Marx, “came here with the purpose of occupying the courthouse.” The shooter deployed stop sticks to prevent other vehicles from getting closer and then opened fire with his assault rifle. He was met outside of the courtyard by a deputy who distracted the terrorist and then shoot him through the windshield, killing him.

Witnesses estimate 50 gunshots were fired, meaning the money the NRA spent blocking legislation that would limit magazine capacity was well-spent.
