90-Year-Old Man And Two Pastors Arrested In Florida For Feeding The Homeless

There are a lot of strange local ordinances in this country. But perhaps none are stranger than the one that resulted in the arrest of a nonagenarian for giving food to hungry people.
Last month, Ft. Lauderdale city officials passed a new measure to crack down on people feeding the homeless.
On Sunday, two days after the new law went into effect, Arnold Abbott, 90, a longtime advocate for the homeless and regular volunteer at a local soup kitchen, was arrested for the crime of giving food to the needy. He now faces up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine. Two local pastors were also arrested and face the same potential sentences.

According to a census last year, there are 2,810 homeless individuals and families who live in Broward County, most of whom reside in Ft. Lauderdale.
Now, Abbott has been put in the unusual position of having to defend his charity work. In an interview with Local 10, he recounted the experience. “One of the police officers said, ‘Drop that plate right now,’ as if I were carrying a weapon,” said Abbott.

Local 10 also spoke with Mayor Jack Seiler, who justified the city’s actions: “We enforce the laws here in Ft. Lauderdale.”
Indeed, Ft. Lauderdale has been enforcing a number of new ordinances intended to criminalize homelessness. In April, the city moved to make it illegal for homeless people to have possessions in public, allowing police officers to confiscate any personal possessions they find after 24 hours. Unsatisfied, the city took its anti-homeless crackdown a step further in September, making it illegal to sleep in public.

For his part, Abbott said he will fight the charges and hopes to overturn the anti-charity ordinance. “I fully believe that I am my brother’s keeper,” he told Local 10. “These are the poorest of the poor, they have nothing, they don’t have a roof over their heads. How do you turn them away?”

C-SPAN Caller On Air: 'Republicans Hate That N***er Obama' (VIDEO)

A man who called into C-SPAN's "Washington Journal" Thursday morning referred to President Barack Obama as "that n***er" before getting booted off the air.

The caller, who gave his name as Anthony from San Diego, California, identified himself as a Republican and started out talking about the direction he thinks the new GOP majority in Congress should take.

"I would just like to say, that the Republicans -- and I'm a Republican -- please do not overreach," the caller began. "I know they're going to overreach but I'm telling you, if you advocate for the repeal of Obamacare and you get too extreme, then Hillary Clinton will be elected President in 2016."

"This is about race," he added. "The Republicans hate that *** Obama."
Host Steve Scully quickly cut off the caller after he dropped the racial slur.

"Okay, I'm gonna stop you there," Scully said. "We're not gonna use that kind of language."

"You can certainly make your point, but you cross the line when you use language like that," he added. "And so to our viewers and listeners, I want to apologize."

C-SPAN callers aren't afraid to voice blunt views on race. On the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, several individuals called into the program to talk about white oppression.

Now that Republicans have control of the Senate, some conservatives are incredibly concerned that the GOP is going to play it too nice.

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh reminded Republicans that they were not elected to do their job so much as to prevent other people from getting anything done.
"It is to stop Barack Obama. It is to stop the Democrats," Limbaugh said on his show Wednesday about Republicans' agenda.

"There is no other reason why Republicans were elected yesterday. Republicans were not elected to govern."

"How can you govern with a president that is demonstrably lawless when he thinks he has to be?" Limbaugh continued. "The Republican Party was not elected to fix a broken system or to make it work. The Republican Party was not elected to compromise. The Republican Party was not elected to sit down and work together with the Democrats."

Laura Ingraham said that attempts to craft bipartisan legislation and ignore the most conservative members of Congress would hurt the party in 2016.
She lambasted Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) for calling for bipartisanship.

Conservative radio host Todd Starnes warned Republicans against working with the president.

A couple of conservatives took issue with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's promise that there won't be a government shutdown.
Conservative radio host Mark Levin said that the last shutdown didn't hurt Republicans and that McConnell "just handed the power of the purse back to the President of the United States."
Red State's Leon Wolf made a similar argument on Thursday.

"It makes zero tactical sense, especially during a confrontation with a defiant and delusional enemy, to declare that you are pre-emptively removing a weapon from your arsenal," Wolf wrote.

Mitch McConnell may have talked a good game about how he wants to work with the president, but that's not going to happen.
He's got a bunch of Republican Senators in blue states who are up for re-election in 2016 and several who want to run for president.
They will never compromise with Democrats on anything.
Even Reince Priebus said of Obama, "Now I think we can box him in."

It looks like only a little over a third of eligible voters even voted, so don't go thinking that this gives your party some kind of a mandate.

The map will be quite different in 2016 when the Republicans who rode the wave in 2010 and won Senate seats in blue states will be up for re-election.
And there could very well be a woman on the presidential ballot, which I'm sure will energize a lot more people to get out and vote.
