‘*** Lynching’ group text shocks Penn freshmen.

Penn students and staff are in an uproar after black freshmen students were added to a GroupMe group titled “*** Lynching.”
Student Calvary Rogers posted on Facebook about the group earlier today:



A Penn staffer told Billy Penn the President’s Office “was blowing up” with calls from concerned parents.

The staffer said the administration was in a meeting this afternoon to discuss a response to the GroupMe posting.

Penn spokesperson Ron Ozio said the GroupMe account appears to be based in Oklahoma.

“Our police and information security staff are trying to locate the exact source,” he said over email, “and see what steps can be taken to cut the account off.”

Ozio recommended affected students to go to the Vice Provost of University Life’s office.

Rogers did not respond to a request for comment.

Penn’s student newspaper, The Daily Penn, reported today that black freshmen at Penn were added to another group titled “Mud Men” and “Trump Is Love,” both of which contained explicit and racist messages.

The paper said black students were organizing in the wake of the activity.

In a statement released just after 5 p.m. on Friday, Penn President Amy Gutmann said university police and “information security staff” are trying to locate the source to see if any steps can be taken to block the account.

“We are absolutely appalled that earlier today Black freshman students at Penn were added to a racist GroupMe account that appears to be based in Oklahoma,” she said in the statement.

“The account itself is totally repugnant: it contains violent, racist and thoroughly disgusting images and messages. This is simply deplorable.”

Mayor Jim Kenney condemned the racist group messages in a statement.

He said he wanted the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations to investigate.

“Everyone is welcome in Philadelphia regardless of whether they are a freshman at one of our universities or if they’ve always called Philadelphia home,” Kenney said.

“It is heartbreaking to see this type of activity here in the birthplace of our democracy and the city of brotherly love.”

Maya Arthur, a Penn junior and programming chair for the United Minorities Council, said the group messages followed an incident from Thursday night where a group began chanting “Build The Wall” at campus bar Smokey Joe’s.

In the first few months of this semester, Arthur said, racist interactions like these had not been an issue.

“This is definitely an outright response to Trump winning,” she said.

Arthur described the feeling of black students on campus this week as tense.

She went home to the Baltimore area for the weekend to get away from it.

“If this is the start, these chants and GroupMe messages,” Arthur said, “the next four years will be a continued struggle and continued other-ing of a part of the Penn community that’s already marginalized.”

The news at Penn follows a racist graffiti incident in South Philly where “Black Bitch” and “Trump Rules” were spray-painted on a car.

OFFICIALS BATTLING REPORTED RACIST INCIDENTS AT PA. HIGH SCHOOL

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. (WPVI) --Shouting racists slurs down hallways, in the gym and at lunch.

Calling black students cotton pickers.

Swastikas are being carved into bathroom stalls, and some students are accused of giving "Heil Hitler!" signs.

These incidents are reportedly happening at Southern Lehigh High School in Center Valley, Pennsylvania.

It's news we had a conversation about with quite a few neighbors on Friday.

A woman named Roshelle is in disbelief.

"My god. I don't believe it. I'm like incredulous. I really am," said Roshelle of Springfield Township.

She's lived in this area for 30 years, and says she's never heard of racism here.

And it's breaking her heart.

"I'm very disappointed," said Roshelle.

Others we spoke with were stunned as well like Donna Solove, who's well aware of the situation.

"Oh I think it's horrifying," said Solove of Center Valley.

She, like many, are pointing some of the blame on the recent election.

Threatening “vigilante” fliers calling for torture of “university leaders spouting off all this diversity garbage” were posted in bathrooms across Texas State University after Donald Trump’s win in the elections.

“Now that our man TRUMP is elected and republicans own both the senate and the house - - time to organize tar and feather VIGILANTE SQUADS and go arrest and torture those deviant university leaders spouting off all this Diversity Garbage,” the fliers, which were glued to bathrooms and mirrors in buildings across the campus, said.

Racial slurs and threats, including the n-word, “Go back to Africa,” and “Whites only,” along with pro-Trump slogans were found scrawled in a high school bathroom in Minnesota on Nov. 9.

Mehreen Kasana, an editor in New York City who was wearing a scarf around her head the day after the election, said that a man told her, “Your time’s up, girlie.”


Middle schoolers in Michigan chanted “Build the wall” in their lunchroom on Nov. 9.

A “Make America White Again” sign with a swastika was graffitied on a softball dugout wall in a park in Wellsville, New York.

Photos of a black baby doll which appeared to be hung in an elevator in Canisius College in New York on the night of Nov. 8, surfaced on social media.

A “fair skinned male” allegedly pulled at a woman’s hijab on Nov. 8, choking her and causing her to fall, San Jose State University police said in an alert to students.

“Trump” was scrawled on the door of a Muslim prayer room at New York University on Nov. 9.

“**** your safe space,” “Build wall,” and “Trump” were scrawled in chalk at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette on Nov. 8.

“Black lives don’t matter and neither does your votes,” was spray-painted across a wall in Durham, North Carolina on Nov. 9.

A social media post on Nov. 10 showed two students from Southern Illinois University wearing blackface and standing in front of a Confederate flag.

A Muslim student at San Diego State University (SDSU) was attacked and robbed by two men “who made comments about President-Elect Trump and the Muslim community” on Nov. 9.

Two men in a pickup truck with a Trump flag drove to Wellesley College, a women’s liberal arts school in Massachusetts and Hillary Clinton’s alma mater, stopped in front of a house for students of African descent, and “antagonized” and screamed “Trump” and “Make America Great Again” on Nov. 9.

A Facebook post on Nov. 9 appeared to show a Trump supporter in a car that had Trump flags and anti-Muslim stickers including “All Muslims are terrorists, deport them all.”

Yarden Katz, a fellow at Harvard Medical School, said that he witnessed a US postal worker telling a man who appeared to be of Hispanic descent, “Go back to your country. This is Trump land” at a gas station in Massachusetts on Nov. 9.

A swastika, “Seig Heil 2016,” and the word “Trump” with the T replaced with a swastika were graffitied on the windows on an empty store in South Philly on Wednesday, Philly.com reported.

Chris Weatherd, a former University of Tennessee linebacker, posted a video that appeared to show his car vandalized with the n-word and “Trump” on Nov. 9 in Knoxville.

Rochelle Abraham posted a picture of a car with a Confederate flag and “Kill Kill Kill” signs in Needham, Massachusetts, the morning after Trump’s victory.

McConnell: It’s ‘hard to tell’ if ending ‘war on coal’ will bring back jobs.

In May, President-elect Donald Trump stood on the stage at the Charleston Civic Center in West Virginia, put on a miners helmet and pretended to shovel coal.
“If I win we’re going to bring those miners back,” Trump said at the rally. “…These ridiculous rules and regulations that make it impossible for you to compete … we’re going to take that all off the table, folks.”

Never before has a billionaire with so many diverse business entanglements directly affected by White House policy taken the presidency, and the potential conflicts of interest facing Donald Trump are so unprecedented that U.S. ethics laws weren’t even written to account for them.

President-elect Trump could hold sway over regulators’ investigations into banks that have lent his businesses hundreds of millions of dollars.

He’ll be directing relations with foreign governments, such as Saudi Arabia’s, whose rulers have bought everything from real estate to a yacht from him as he struggled to pay off debts.

His lawyer, Michael Cohen, confirmed Thursday that Trump plans to turn the family business over to his adult children Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric through what Cohen called a “blind trust.”

“That’s not a blind trust, that’s a seeing trust,” said Norm Eisen, former ethics czar under President Barack Obama.

“This is as intricate a government ethics problem as has ever existed, and I hope he’ll be getting a bunch of experts into a room to figure out how to deal with this.”
