Rule #1 for press relations is that you can obfuscate, you can misrepresent, you can shade the truth to a ridiculous degree, or play dumb and pretend not to know things you absolutely do know.

But you can't peddle affirmative, provable falsehoods.

And it's not because there's some code of honor among press secretaries, but because once you're a proven liar in public, you can't adequately serve your principal.

Every principal needs a spokesman who has the ability, in a crunch, to tell the press something important and know that they'll be believed 100 percent, without reservation.

But like I said, this isn't about Spicer.

What's worrisome is that Spicer wouldn't have blown his credibility with the national press on Day 2 of the administration unless it was vitally important to Trump.

And if media reports about crowd size are so important to Trump that he'd push Spicer out there to lie for him, then it means that all the tinpot-dictator, authoritarian, characterological tics that people worried about during the campaign are still very much active.

You know who obsessed about crowd size? Fidel Castro.

You know who did not? George Washington, John Adams, Andrew Jackson, FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, Reagan, Clinton, and every other man to ever serve as president of these United States of America.

If you want to support the Trump agenda, that's fine. Worth doing, even.

But never lose sight of the degree to which Trumpism corrupts.

Many thousands of Americans and conservative groups were harassed, intimidated and delayed by the IRS simply for opposing Obama's leftist agenda.


Groups with the word "Constitution" or "voter fraud" in their title were singled out.

I guess you don't know what the word 'individual' in my question means.

First of all 501(c)(4)s aren't allowed to have political activities as their primary purpose.
The groups that were looked at had names that sounded political like 'Tea Party.'

Secondly this was a policy initiated by the IRS itself, not Obama.

In case you don't remember there were tons of groups that were springing up around that time and applying for tax exempt status, and the IRS needed a way to weed out the ones that were primarily political.

Of the 298 groups that were singled out for extra scrutiny, 72 had 'tea party' in the name, 13 had 'patriot' and 11 had '9/12', which was in reference to Glenn Beck's '9/12 movement.'

Can you name any groups that lost their tax exempt status?

There was a lot of doubt in the intelligence community about WMD's and especially nuclear weapons.
Bush and Cheney massaged the intelligence, cherry picked what fit their agenda, and in some cases out and out lied about it.

Well today in his press conference Spicer doubled down on that and insisted that he was right when he said that more people viewed this inauguration than any other.
